Default What are the Pros & Cons of the 306DSS?

I have the following proposition on the table and I am trying to get as much advice as I can on if this is a good deal or not. I will be upgrading from a stock 302ci motor. Here is what is being offered:

306DSS (Brand New) 1200.00
E303 CAM 190.00
Timing Chain 100.00
Motorsports Gaskets 107.00
Lifters 130.00
Pickup 28.00
AFR 185cc Heads 1000.00
Rocker Arms 265.00
Pushrods 55.00
Ford Waterpump 89.99
Pilot Bearing 23.50

Parts=$3201.39
Labor =$1540.00
Total=$5000.00

I think the cheapest DSS short block (Bullet) is around $1500 itself. The AFR185s are also priced right, as they're around $1350 or so new.

If the shop that's doing this does good work, I think it's a good deal just looking at the block and AFR 185s if they're both new.

My first question would be is you current 5.0 tired. If it is not, then I would say it is not that good of a deal, because you are not going to be gaining that much that you will capitalize on with that DSS.

Why not use your stock roller lifters? And if you are buying a new cam, the guys on here will tell you over and over the Ford Alpha series cams are ok, but there are others out there that have newer technology developed into them. All this is assuming you a 302 roller block.

If you are just basically adding a heads and cam combo, your current block would work just fine, unless it has a load of miles on it.
