gear installations...
Has anyone here installed their own gears? I am looking to save some beans if I can. Also if you have what special tools are required? What do I need besides the gears and lube? Thanks... I have the stock gears (2.73), and 110k on the odometer.

You can read about it on my site, or I guess there's also a tech article on one of those other Mustang sites. Of course, I like my article better Its not a job for the faint of heart. If its a daily driver, and you're prepared to live with gear noise, then you'd be better off having a professional install them since you probably won't be able to rent the proper tools. I've got a friend who loans me the installation tools, but all told they'd probably cost about $1000 to buy outright. My best advice is to let a pro do it. I've installed four different sets in my car over the years, but I refuse to install them in anybody else's car simply because the margin for error is so small. Pay the $300 to have a shop do it so if there's noise or problems they're warranty will cover subsequent work.

Ive done it myself, and the second time around, I paid a shop. But I paid $150.00, which I thought was worth it. If you have to pay $300, I would do it myself. You need a bearing press, a dial indicator, a shim kit. Its not real hard, but even if you take your time, you might end up with some gear whine. If you can live with that, go for it. You can take the pinion to a auto parts store, and they should press the bearing on and off for you.
