Default People who are in the 12's please respond!

OK, I own an 89 lx vert. stock motor, all the bolt-ons and nitrous. The motor leaks oil from the rear main seal i believe and the car just seems slower to me after many hard miles on it (close to 90000). What set up will get me in the mid 12's (without nitrous)? I am looking for what motor you have, heads, intake, and cam. I want to keep it EFI as well. If you have places as to where you purchased your parts, that would be helpful as well. I want to start making some purchases soon and stay close to around 3 grand! Thanks for all replies!

trick flow heads, performer rpm intake, 30# injectors, 255 fuel pump, headers, h pipe, throttle body, mass air, k&n, i think you might have to go over your limit of 3000, ifyou want to stay on motor. your best bet would be go 347 or 331 with a good set of heads

Alum heads (Edel, TFS or AFR), RPM or Trick Flow intake, TFS Stage 1 (or equivalent) cam, Long Tube headers, a good tune and slicks. That's the simple recipe, the rest of it is weight and putting the power to the ground.

I bought my Edelbrock 6032's from Summit last year during the 10% off deal they had (just like this year), and when I get my RPM intake (replacing the ported Cobra I ran last year), lose a little weight and learn how to drive I should be easily in the mid 12's on motor.

You guys crack me up.

If you only want 12's, you don't need anything fancy at all. You just need to drive it well, and hook up the power that you have.

You didn't mention if you have a T-5 or an AOD (manual or auto).

The biggest necessity is a pair of slicks. IMO its a waste of money for these high dollar engine combo's just to go spinning the power away down the track with street tires or even drag radials. Slicks are the only way to fly.

I went a best of 12.85@106 at a local slow track (always 3 tenths slower than another one I visit). The weather wasnt that great, I wasnt even power shifting, and the 60ft was only in the mid 1.7's, so it didnt hook THAT great.
This was with ported stock heads (free + tools/gaskets), a B303 cam ($100 on ebay), explorer intake ($150 from MW classifieds), and all the other usual boltons.

The car had atleast a 12.70 in it, if not more. But that combo is now gone, so we'll never know for sure

BUT if you want more out of the car, then I'd suggest a set of AFR165's, a custom cam, and a holley or performer RPM intake.

good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree fiveohpatrol, i run e.t. streets and nothing less, also, with some porting on the exhaust side of my e7's, i could probaly see high 12's, but im not going to bother, i have my eye on some brodix, or edel aluminumheads, that ought to do the trick, also im slow on the 60' with these highway gears.

Cool

1 jimmy D , you have a 12 sec car. Just like five oh patrol said, traction! You need suspension. 90/10s, 4 cyl springs (all 4), Poly bushings in the rear control arms, Batt in back, air bags, under drive crank pully, short belt, 26 x 10 slicks. $100.00 set of clutchs in the rear.
You goals will come with ease. You motor in my car will run twelves all day, and 11s with the shot on it.

I seriouly doubt if his car is gonna run 12's with a 105 trap speed with the nitrous.

Its alot harder to get 12's out of a vert. The first thing you need to work on is suspension like 88workcar said.

Sub-frame connectors are a must. They helped my vert alot.

You could get some ported E7's and an explorer intake for about $400.00 total off of E-bay. That would help you alot.

thanks for all replies- MY suspension is totally stock. I have a guy that will weld under the seats and the length of the car to stiffen it up (seeing how it is a vert) for 250 bucks. I was also thinking of selling the vert and buying a hardtop and then doing the motor on it. Istill dont know. Do you think i should go with a 306 or 347 stroker for the block. I dont think the bottom end would hold with new heads on it. I was thinking of going with the AFR 165 (58cc?) aluminum heads, edelbrock performaer RPM intake, and a cam from somewhere. Am I crazy for thinking I am going to spend 3 grand? Can I run my headers with this new set up or do I have to buy new ones? Thanks again for all replies.

AND I plan on buying some cheatrer slicks so I can drive it daily in the summer!
The car is a 5 speed!

yes you can use your headers, btw, are you looking to keep it real streetable? if not, a 10:5:1 347 with the heads/cam, would be in low 12's, probaly high 12's on radials, maybe 109 mph in a vert.
