Question sound at start up and shifts

I have a 302 crate motor with a rebuilt C-4 and a 9'' in a 67. At start up and when I shift gears around 3-4000 rpms I get a bad sounding dry metal on metal clank. It only occurs about half the time. The sound is like some one dragging a quarter over radiator fins, just a real quick sound. Could this be the alternator bearings or PS pump? It seems to be from the front part of the engine. I have looked underneath it today and don't see anything loose or out of place. The flex plate looks ok. Thanks

I don't think so, I have no shroud... If this helps the sound is the same in durration and loudness no matter how it shifts. At start up its about half as long, 1/4 second maybe.. just quick enough to hear it... thanks AJ

Could be dry bearings on the alt. Here's what I'd do. Have someone else start the car while you listen for the sound under the hood. Have them keep starting it while you zero in on the noise.

Bad alt bearings should "fluctuate" in sound though, different RPM usually makes different sounds. Also check that the alt bolt didn't come loose, and maybe the alt fan itself is hitting the casing. Pull the inspection cover, and double check your converter bolts, make sure they're all still tight too.
