Off Road Exhaust in Los Angeles?

Anyone out there in California (specifically L.A. county) run an off-road H or X-pipe on their daily driver? I'm thinking of getting one but I hear the ticket is $2500 if you get caught. I'm curious if the cops out here care enough to get underneath the car and actually check.

Ran an off road X-pipe on wifes car for 2 years in San Diego, off road H-pipe on mine and three buddies with off road pipes that lived in the Southern Cali area. They just swapped pipes for smog testing time. Never had any probs with the cops, even when I gots tickets, the pipe issue never came up.
