Default 4.10 gears on the street ?

We're getting ready to upgrade the rear in our project car. We were going towards a weekend warrior and drag car, so that's why we were looking at 4.10s with our 5-speed. Now he's changed his mind a little and still wants to drive the fox on the street.

Looking for input on whether 4.10s are too agressive for street use, or should we back down to 3.73s?

is it going to be driven for extended highway trips? If it was street/and light highway trips go for it! it'll only cost a little bit more on the gas bill....big deal. have fun with it!

Not a lot of highway driving - my concern would be spinning the tires while trying to accelorate on a highway or passing with 4.10s.

how much power you plan on making?? with 4.10's you might not even need to downshift unless you want to blow past someone. depends on your speed. spinning ires won't be a problem at highways speeds even when downshifting unless you have a blower or nitrous.

Depends on a few things...if you plan on doing all that then I'm sure the gas won't be a problem for you.. It'll take a holy sh*tload of power to spin the tires once you get moving pretty good, but I'm sure it can be done.. If you plan on making the car fast as hell though, I actually think 3.73 or even maybe 3.43 could be better in the long run, for the extra trap speed... 4.11 is great for cars making low to moderate power, but cars with real extreme power might not get the trap speed they need out of it..... Haven't done the speed and rpm math but sounds right in my head...

Default 4.10's

If your going blower NO 4.10's............the next question is for the street, what tires are you gonna run????, unless you run damn near slicks you'll spin into the next zip code......

I suggest 3.73's

Default blower gears

If you plan on supercharging the car anytime soon...I'd definitely go for some gears that will take full advantage of the blower. In my opinion, 3.55s or 3.73s would be a better gear for a supercharged 302.

I sent you a long PM on this, but I have to admit, I love my 4.10's compared to my 3.55's. I know I am at 4,100 ft, and not running as good of times as it seems I should be running, but these things are a blast! Just make sure you have the tires to support traction. My tires suck, and then some, and as gtsr515 said, I spin into the next zip code getting on the freeway, even in 3rd gear they spin some. Just be careful with them, and get some good rubber. I say go for the 4.10's.

When I was N/A with 4.10's, I didn't have any problem with spinning the tires at all. I had DR's on the back and they would hook up great on the street. Forget about first gear though...I would shift into second before I got through an intersection. Gas milage wasn't bad at all...it all depends on how heavy your foot is.

It also depends on what your definitions of good and bad gas mileage are. My definition of bad is 14 mpg and below....that's what happens to you when you drive a V6 for well over a year, and learned to drive on a 4 cyl.

Cool

I love my 4.30s. I drive every day. I go on 1-2 hour trips regularly. Its no problem. Monday I am going to order a taller tire, for the blower.

88workcar - are you going to keep the 4.30s with the blower?

I figure that the blower will be good for 70hp. I am going to jet the NOS for 70 hp and work with tire sizes from there. If I can get by with a 28" 29" or 30" tire and keep the 4.30s I will. At that point I will install the blower. And not use the NOS. Unless prevolked.

Hey there I would go with the 4.10 gear. I would go with new rubber and a little bit bigger size. you will not beleive the difference the 4.10 has over the stock. Go with the 4.10

Default go with 4.10

i have a 94 cobra 5.0 i recently installed a 4.10 rear end in mine and i love it. i was worried about highway use also and its not a problem. cruising highway at about 55 or 60 i was a lil bit over
2,300rpm's i would definatly go with the 4.10's.

I do about 2600 or so on the highway with 4.10's and, despite the gas guzzling and all, it's SO fun. I easily got it up to over 90 on the on-ramp just romping the gas pedal with a friend in the car to see what it'd do. I hit 5000+ rpms in 3rd gear before even merging...let's just say the look on my face was:

Well guys - we got the car back today; we decided to back down to 3.73s. Man we need some good rubber in the back now - as it's very easy to bust it lose with these cheap tires we have on the car.

Now my next question relates to tires - should we run DRs on the street or is there a sticky radial tire that will allow us to get that seat of the pants acceration?

For tires, it all depends on how much street driving you're going to do. Will you drive it in the rain? Rain can play havok with alot of DR's when you get to highway speeds. Normal city driving should not be too difficult (still be careful). When I got my 4.10's in, I had Nitto DR's on teh back and they hook up great on the street. I don't know why, but they hook like crazy on the street! I run my DR's at 25 psi for street driving. I never drive in the rain so I can't comment on their wet performance or grip.

For a normal street tire, any soft compound should work better than the cheapo rubber you have on there now. And the normal street tire will handle much better in the rain as well.
