Default Cars bucks when put into reverse auto. trans?

When I put my car in reverse it will buck fairly hard. I have my idle around 600-650. It helps if I put it in drive first then to reverse. Why is this? I thought it maybe because my idle was too high. The car has an auto. trans and is carb. 80's (early)

When you say "buck", does it keep bucking or does it just do it once? What year car and which engine does it have?
