Question car fluctuates and then dies

I have an 87 GT Convertible and after putting it in neutral it fluctuates and if I don't keep stepping on the gas the car dies out, but starts right back up again. IF I know that I have to stop at a stop sign or at a light and I am driving, I usually tend to put the car in neutral aways in advance before stopping and this is the time when it usaully stalls out. I have no idea what this problem could be but I need any advice ASAP to get this solved. Thanks, Carl

The only thing I can think of is the VSS, but that would only apply if the car was moving and it stalls. If the car dies when it is already stopped it is not the VSS.
