Default Msd Icm?

Does MSD make an ICM for a 5.0 HO? If they do, would anyone have a part # handy? Or a rough price? Is it worth it at all? I can't imagine an ICM would function any difference, especially since they either work or they dont....

Pardon that..still using GM lingo. ICM = Ignition Control Module. On these Fords, it'd be the sucker slapped to the side of the distributor..what the hell do they call it..the TFI Module or something equally strange?

I have an MSD distributor w/ the MSD TFI module. I am not sure they sell the TFI module individually.

Whatever you do, do NOT get the Mallory TFI module.

Well guess I'll just be calling MSD and finding out. I'm getting a 6AL box soon...now, with the 6AL box, the MSD wires, cap and rotor, and the Blaster TFI coil....will a replacement TFI module make any difference at all? I know it's a "if it works, it works- if it doesnt, it doesnt" part, but, is there anything special about aftermarket TFI modules that work better?? Thanks man..

Yeah, they come with cool stickers.

If you are replacing everything else, by all means, replace the TFI module as well, but don't pay extra for one from MSD. Unless you don't get enough decals with all the other stuff.

I'm sure the manufacturer would say there is, and I'm not here to say they're wrong. But I can tell you that, for what it is, and what it does, you will never need anything more than the OEM module for street/strip applications. Honestly, the OEM electronic ignition systems Ford used in 1993 were better than anything MSD sold. It's not like the old HEI systems that were great until 5k rpm. The Ford systems were capacitive discharge before MSD went that way! I installed a Crane HI-6 in my '95 F150, and it ran better with the factory system (and there was nothing wrong with the HI-6).

However, seeing as those systems are 10 years old now, you might as well replace them, and you might even notice a difference. But if you do, it's not because the MSD is so much better, but because the system it's replacing is old, tired, and wearing out.

Default I'll second that...

I have to agree...

I spent $240 a couple of years ago on a billet Mallory distributor when I upgraded all of my ignition stuff with a motor rebuild.

What I got for my trouble was a pain in the butt occassional high-end miss that proved very difficult to pin down. After swapping everything else(TFI's, coils, etc..) it proved to be the hall sensor INSIDE of the new fancy-schmancy billet distributor.

So, I chunked the $240 distributor turned boat anchor and put the OEM 120,000 mile distributor back in and it ran like a champ.

Now, with a 145,000 miles on it, the OEM unit finally started missing and the gear was fairly worn, so I got the MSD distributor. Most places want $200+ for an OEM Motorsport distributor, so I said what the heck and got the MSD for $280.

Boy, that was boring.
