I don’t understand.... Harmonic balance, flywheel
I have a 351W. I’m told I have to use a 28 oz flywheel since the 351 comes with a 28oz harmonic balance.
My question is can I put a 50 oz harmonic balance on the eng. And use a 50oz factor flywheel? I don’t understand to much about this balance stuff. Could someone fill me in and tell me if swapping the harmonic balance will work? If not why? Help me understand this flywheel and harmonic balance relation to each other and the eng. Thanks |

Re: I don’t understand.... Harmonic balance, flywheel
I am not totally shure on this, but I believe the 351 requires the 28 ounce balance to balance the crankshaft. Also early 302's, use the 28 oz.
The balancer balances the crank, not the flywheel. The flywheel has to be matched to the crank and balancer. If you dont get any other answers, call summit and talk to one of the techs, and they will explain it better.

Re: I don’t understand.... Harmonic balance, flywheel
That makes sence, and I tank you but I'm sure there is more to it than that.......
example,, The harmonic balance can only go on the crank in one position becouse it has to matched to the keyway, gut the flywheel can be bolted on to the crank in any posistion even though it is off balance? depending on where you posisition the flywheel, woulnt you think it would off balance the crank? |

Re: I don’t understand.... Harmonic balance, flywheel
The bolt holes for the flywheel/flexplate in the crank are arranged so that it will only go on one way. Same with the balancer and keyway. This is referred to as external balancing.

Re: I don’t understand.... Harmonic balance, flywheel
Rev is absolutely correct. If you hold the flywheel up, the holes are semi-closs, but as you rotate the flywheel the holes will line up perfectly when they reach the proper placement position.

Re: I don’t understand.... Harmonic balance, flywheel
This is the first time I mixed and matched a eng. and trans....I learned something new today...
All the other clutches I replaced were for stock cars and I never noticed that the holes were offset, Daaa! I Just don't have the money to go out and buy a new Flywheel. I found a machine shop that will take my 50oz Flywheel down to a 28oz for $60.00 and resurface for another $50.00 $120.00...... Thanks guys........ |

Re: I don’t understand.... Harmonic balance, flywheel
I have an extra one that I will let go for $50.00 plus shipping. I bought it for my 351 swap. It is a 28 oz imbalance w/ 157 tooth. The only problem is that it didn't line up with my clutch pegs/bolt holes. ??? I don;t know which clutch application it would take. I ended up going with the Ford Racing flywheel.

Re: I don’t understand.... Harmonic balance, flywheel
I just want to clarify that I'm not sure which clutch app it will take. The flywheel bolted up perfectly to the block, but the pressure plate pegs/bolt holes didn't line up. It's never been rotated on the engine.

Falcons Talon, thats great!... I will buy it if S&H is not to much to Hawaii...... Is this a stock flywheel from a earler model eng? Why I ask is that the early stock flywheels will only except a 10" clutch and I need a flywheel that will take a 10.5 " clutch. If you were puting a 10.5" clutch on to your 351W thats why it didn't fit. If you could mesure the clutch seat on the flywheel (not the entire flywheel) where the dick sits, you will be able to tell what disk it will except. Let me know Thanks Raymond |
