Taking off the Smog, HP Gains??
How much HP gain would i be looking at in taking off all of the smog stuff, including the air pump which i know is robbing hp from the crank.

smog
Not as much as you think. If you have emmisions testing, it is really not worth the hassle of installing and removing every year. Just run a short belt if you are really worried about it.

You will not gain any power to make an any type of noticeable difference. The smog pump is pretty much a free wheeling pulley anyway so no gains there. You would benefit from bypassing the AC compressor and the power steering pump, those do rob some power!

Not to mention, if you still have cats, they will clog solid without the smog pump.
Take care, ~Chris

So about how long does it take to clog the cats up? I've been driving my car for about a year now w/o the smog pump. I'd assume that I wouldn't notice a gradual loss of power. Should I expect a moderate gain by installing a off road H-pipe?

My cats were clogged on my 88 vert a while back. I bought an O/R X-pipe and from a 15.2 @88mph to a 14.79 @93mph.

The only way, from what I understand, to get any gains from eleminating the smog pumi is to take it out. The pump and all associated plumbing would be a weight issue more than anything.

if the AC clutch isnt engaged it shouldnt be robbing of any more power then the smog pump, right? if you're racing with your AC on, then that's a different story... though I would imagine a good weight reduction if you removed the compressor entirely

I think that the AC clutch is automatically disengaged by the computer at WOT. I heard this somewhere before and my AC stops blowing cold air in my car at WOT. Either thats proof that what I heard is true, or maybe I have a gremlin in my AC system.

You're right, I'm going to back you on that one... I've been driving around in the summer and floored it to pass or somerhing and it starts blowing hot air for a couple seconds... so I would have to agree that, that is the case
