I bought a comp polymer upper (stock) and love it. Mid range increased slighly, under 2500 suffers a little but not that noticable on my light car.
I like the looks of it and it cleaned up my engine area giving me access to valve covers etc. I still have EGR, etc too. Got mine on corral, used, $115.00. You can modify a upper as you wanted, but its way too time consuming for very little gain.

I'd got an intake similar to what you want to do.
I have the stock upper which has been cut and shortened and welded back together. Works great.

I used a 3/8 spacer between the intakes too.

Comp Polymer Box Upper. (Comp Cams) They are made for stock or Cobra lowers. Bolted right on after I got the right length allen bolts, because of the spacer.
Mine is strange, the top has a metal plate on it. Most have just a sticker. Low end suffers a little. But it pulls hard from 2500 and up. I still get 22 + mpg. I recomend doing it.

No I didn't do the intake myself, the previous owner did it for me. But yes he did cut and weld the intake.
Sorry i don't have a pic of the engine bay right now, but I can get one this weekend (afternoon shift sucks), I'll borrow my friends digi cam.

We're fabbing up a truck lower, cut the upper about 2.75 inches from were it bolts to the lower, and fabbing up an aluminum box on top similar to Hogans intakes. I'll try and post pics of it when finished.
Its probably going to take away some bottom end but should look cool. If that doesnt work well i'm going to cut the stock upper and port the inside and weld back together. Then port the lower. |

Sorry for the late response to this. Got kinda busy with work and some other events that happened to the car over that past few weeks.
But I did get some pics of the intake done. Just go to www.cardomain.com/id/notdadz go to page 5.
