Default problem???

i have a 1990 5.0 lx. nothing is done to it except a cat back exhaust. the problem is if you are just driving the car and go to 3000 rpm the little battery light comes on and the needle on the battery gauge goes all the way up. i have no idea what is causing this problem or if this is bad. im really hoping it is not major so if anyone has had the same problem or can help me thanks alot.

The regulator in the alternator is probably shot, replace the alternator and your problems will go away.. Have it tested at Autozone or Advanced autoparts.. Hopefully they can spin it that high but pretty sure thats your issue.
