R12 to R134
I read some time ago, I think in Car Craft where they pumped R134 into an older a/c system and in their words "blew like winter". But I'm quite certain it wasn't a Ford, I don't know if that's an issue or not.
Is there an inexpensive solution here? I just put a new a/c condensor on my 86 5.0 so the system is empty right now. Has the price of R12 come down? Should I just stick with R12 and forget about it? |

R-134 won't cool as well in a Mustang as well as R-12 due to the size of the standard condenser. I converted my '89 last summer and it does a fair job, but not as good as it was.
If you convert, basically, you should replace the evaporator/drier, flush the oil from the system, change the oil in the compressor and install the proper oil for R-134. If you can swing the cost of R-12, use it. Go to http://www.ackits.com and read the message boards and information about the proper way to do the conversion.

R-12
I still cling to the R-12 b/c, as was stated before, it cools a hell of a lot better than R-134. I live in Florida though and one you need is AC.
Interestingly, the tree huggers have discovered that R-12 isn't the satanic evil they thought. It is still expensive though, about $50 a can I believe.

Mine works OK too...
We converted my '69 to 134 several years ago... it seems to work just a good as before... I think my friend has a case of R12 stashed away... he might want to sell it by now... I'll check with him if anyone is interested...

I live in florida also and deal with this hot humid climate all the time, the 134 cools just fine, get it done by a proffesional and you'll have no problems with cooling.
