Which Gears to use
A buddy of mine has a 86gt with a 3 speed auto. right now he has 4:10's and he hates it. He was wondering which gears would be the best for an everyday driver, and still be ballsy. I told him 3:55's would probably be good, but he thinks 3:73's.Please give me your insight. Thanks

Re: Which Gears to use
Well if he hates it with the 4.10's, he won't like 3.73's either. With a 26" tire and assuming this is a c-4 were talking about here, at 60 mph in high gear he is turning 3180 RPM. Switching to 3.73's will only drop them to 2982 RPM. Switching to 3.55's will drop the RPM's to 2753. I think the 3.55's will be his best bet. I think the 3.27's would be too tall, but that's my opinion. They would put him at 2536 RPM. Remember all of this is with a 26" tire and a c4 transmission.

Re: Which Gears to use
If he switches to a 16 or 17 inch tire, that would help too.
ieatcamaros, can do the math for you.

Re: Which Gears to use
Another vote for the stick shift! I'm running 4.30's right now, and they're coming out, for a set of 4.56's. Like IEC said, won't see a whole lotta difference with the 3.73's, so I'd say 3.55 for the daily driver, and he'll still feel it on the ole "azz dyno".
Anyone need a good 4.30? Come to think of it, I have a 4.10 sittin here too.
