Anybody know about axles and spools?

As I have posted in another thread, I ran a 1.418 60' Friday. Both of my front tires left the ground. I have stock axles and rearend.

What do I need to build a stronger differential? Will our 4 lug axles get the job done. What torque range do you need 5 lug? Are hardened 28 spline axles strong? What spool is recommended to insure the car stays straight? Any help would be appreciated.

Why not just build a diff and get it over with?

5 lug, 31 spline axles, girdle, axle brace and locker? The 8.8 is a virtual rip off of the chevy 12 bolt and from what I understand the 8.8 has bee known to take upto 1100 hp?

If your using the car on the street then a spool is not the best way to go. No diff action so that means if you hit a wet spot then it gets ugly.

BTW, how much does your car weigh and do you have any power adders?

My car is a track only car so don't have to worry about those wet spots.

I do not have any power adder. With my future mods I plan no more than 400 hp. My concerns for getting a spool is because my front wheels come off the ground and I don't want to take a chance of the car turning in the air. Then while I have it apart installing a spool might as well make it a little stronger too. The factory axles have held up but only one 1.418 lauch. I just don't know how much they can take.

My race weight is 2420 pounds.

Damn, That light track weight is the ONLY reason you did not break an axle already!

A spool is fine for the track. I ran one for a while and it drove me nuts on the street. A spool and a set of 31 spline Mosers is all you need. The fancy girdle can always help too.

If you want both tires to always spin at the same speed you have no choice but to use a spool.

Do C clip eliminators come with the Moser 31 spline axles? Or do you have to buy them extra. Do I need C clip eliminators? My car is a trailer car so the spool should be no problem. Thanks!

Definately get yourself the C-Clip eliminators for safety reasons.In the event you break an axle,the C-clip eliminators will keep your axle & wheel from flying off your car

I've got them myself.Many people including myself,after they've installed them,have leakage problems after they have been installed.Is there a fix? I dunno,haven't heard of any yet,BUT I would definately get the C-Clip eliminators for safety reasons.My C-Clip eliminators were included with the 31-spline Moser axles that I purchased.Look in the MM&FF magazines for places that sell this type of set-up.

I just recently bought Moser 31-spline axles with C-clip eliminators and a Moser spool through FordSpeed. They had about the best price I could find last month. The C-clip elims come preassembled on the axles which makes for easy installation. So far I haven't had any leaking, but the car hasn't left the garage either. I did put RTV in the bearing groove before I installed them to try and prevent any leaking. I also was careful about prepping the axle housing and backing plates well before I installed the axles.

Why would 31 spline axles be more prone to leakage than factory 28 spline? Is there another leak path created with these axles?

With C-clip eliminators, you actually remove the stock axle bearings & seals and cut off about 1/2" of the housing end. The elims then bolt on outboard of the backing plate and have their own sealed bearing units. Some models have a tendenancy to leak a little. The newer model Mosers have been redesigned to prevent this.

If your car is a strip car, don't worry too much about leakage. It usually starts when you run C-clips on the street. The seals are'nt designed to handle the loads of daily driving with lots of cornering.

With that light weight of a car, 31 spline will last forever. You can stick with the 4 lug if you want. There are plenty of cars with more HP and running quicker times than you.

I know the Mark Williams and the Superior axles are designed not to leak with C-clips you may want to check them out.

With the new design of the Moser axles and the Mark Williams,Superior axles...in the future I'll know of some better choices so I don't have leaking C-Clip eliminators
