Question How many miles on your stang?

How many miles do you have on your car? I have and '88 and it's got 133k on it and still runs beautifully.

I change the oil every 3k and all that jazz.. keep it maintained very well.

How long will my car last without having to replace major things like the engine or tranny? Anyone got more than 200k?

My car has 130,000 miles of severe abuse and the tranny went out at 90,000 (last owner) and i went through the bottom end of the engine and replaced the bearings while i was in there, but it still is running strong with no smoke. If you maintain your car and don't beat the bejesus out of it (like i do to my car) it should easily last you 200k.

My brother bought his first stang, a '90, a few years ago. It had 150K on it when he bought it and over 250K when he sold it. He never had anything done to it. Even the AOD was still stock! The people who bought it pulled the motor/tranny at 300K and replaced them just for piece of mind. They totaled the car 2 weeks later . That is amazing if you ask me, almost unbelievable but I saw it. My old '91 has about 140K on it now but the tranny has been rebuilt and it has a bad lifter. Other than that the '91 hasn't had any problems. My '93 has been a whole different story, the motor crapped out at 70K miles, the tranny went shortly after. Now that I have a 331 in the car, I have gotten pretty used to pulling and rebuilding the T5! I have seen several other 5.0's go well past the 150K mark though. They are some of the best motors ever made in my opinion, but like everything, sometimes a bad one comes along and I happened to get a bad one with the '93 .

The 89 has about 190,000 miles but everything but the radiator cap has been. . . .wait, that was replaced too. Seriously, at about 160.000 miles just about everything had to be replaced. The engine lost the oil pump drive which pretty much did the engine in as well. The transmission gave it up about then but we got by on a junk yard special till about three mopnths ago and I had to rebuild it. Funny thing though. It ran as fast at 160,000 as it did when we first got it. Tough little motors.
The Green thing has about 160,000 miles on it but the transmission finally gave in about a month ago, same thing for it. The engine was replaced twice before we got it, No. 1 had a nitrous nightmare and blowed up, the second did the same I heard. THe 331 in it now is stock as far as add-ons go. Intake, heads, MAF. . .everything stock.
These cars have some really hard miles on them. The 82, which is in retirement waiting to be pieced out, had some really hard miles on it. The Cleveland in it went about 2 years at the hands of my youngest son before it said F**kitt!!

Wow I'm impressed! I havent had any major replacements done and I've owned the car for 9 years. I dont beat it either. I did replace the heater core, water pump and head gaskets at one point or another. Other things just were just minor repairs. I'm kinda freaked out.. like waiting for something to go wrong.

My oil pressure gauge (stock) I dont think works very well. Sometimes it sits on the red line all day long. I've noticed this for years now. It occasionally rises up every once in a while. It makes me nervous because I think well what if my oil pump is about to go out someday, I will never know. My fuel guage is f*cked too.. sometimes when the tank is close to low it will rise all the way to the top I suppose I could put some after market guages in but I dont know the first thing about it.

I bought my 90GT with 92k, now has 114k. My cousin was the ORIGINAL owner and the car is still stock to this day. Runs perfect. Always was maintained and sometimes the right foot got heavy. He changed the heater core once. I have given it a full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter) and have just recently replaced a worn cooling system including the leaky radiator, cracking fan, worn fan clutch, thermostat, and water pump that just started leaking, that one was the last straw!

any other common problem areas?

all in all, solid reliability in my opinion!

I've got an 89 and I just rolled over 100K last month... I'm planning on putting new heads intake and cam into it this month... with everything everyone's saying I'm not too worried.. even if I only get another 20K out of it before I blow it. Im doing ok.

I did blow out my AOD at about 90K.. .though that seems pretty common

My 89' has about 130,00 miles on the odometer but the factory engine blew at about 90,000. Too many shots of Nitrous I guess! The new engine is a factory GT-40 engine (B-303 cam) but I used the stock intake. The B-303 cam gives a nice lopey idle and plenty of midrange power.... Needless to say, the Nitrous bottle is gone!

Other than the new engine, a set of full length Heddman Headers, Underdrive pullys and 373:1 gears W/Auburn differential, it's pretty much bone stock.

No other major problems except for ripping apart the torque boxes. Welded in a few steel plates and it's good as new (maybe better!)

My advice would be to get some aftermarket guages, they are much easier to put on than to replace than the factory ones. I still use my factory guages but only because I can't afford autometer!

The fuel guage is probably the sender in the tank. You could probably ignore it...by now you know what kind of mileage you get so just reset the trip odometer on every fillup and make sure you fill up again when you've driven 12 gallons * your mpg. So if you get 20 mpg then fill up every 12*20 = 240 miles.

I feel your worry about the oil guage though. Mine started wigging out last summer. I actually rode 4th gear down the highway because the pressure dropped to zero below 2k rpms! I soon realized if that was really happening my engine would have fried probably before I even noticed the guage. I bought a mechanical kit (Sunpro, water temp, oil pressure and ammeter I think, $30 or so) but haven't yet installed it. The tubing is coiled up in a tight ring and I wind up breaking it if I unroll it.

Back to your original question...a little complicated. The car registered about 79k 1.5 years ago when I got it. BUT...the speedometer was broken. Drive gear in tranny came loose. I drove probably 15k-20k until I rebuilt the trans last August. I'm now at 91k but there is an error of 9% because the new gear combo doesn't match my tires (another story), so about 13k miles since then. I'll estimate 18k for the pre trans rebuild.

79k + 18k + 13k = 110k. Plus I don't know how long the previous owner drove with the speedo broken. So it's probably a few grand above that.

Thanks for the advice peeps.

I will probly ignore the fuel guage.. since I do know how many miles I can go on a full tank. (Only about 180! ) and I never let it get close to empty. I guess I should get an oil pressure guage. I wish I had some guys like you around me though to help me install stuff like this.

I'm glad my engine hasnt blown up yet! Scary to think some of yours have blown up after only 60 - 90k. But then again.. I am vewwwy nice to my baby..

185,xxx on my 88 GT vert 5spd. Runs like a top and uses less than a quart in 3,000 miles. Just did rebuild the T5 and trac-loc last winter.

aftermarket gauges are easy to install.. just need to find a key on power source if you go electric... witch are probabaly the simplest to install... where do you live anyway?

Key on power source: a source of power that only delivers juice when the key is in the 'on' position.

My 86' GT had 128,995 when I bought it Oct. 01', it now has 155,157. The car looks and runs great, although the rear main seal has developed a small leak. Nothing too serious, it uses a quart every 1k miles, which is a lot more than I'd like it to.

A friend of mine has an 86' interceptor that has 220k on everything, and it's still running strong. I won't be surprised to see it get close to 300k.
