302ci to 400+hp?
i would just like to know if its possible to get a 302ci to 400hp without a blower or stroker. and if so...what would u need to do it?

I suppose the Nitrous answer wasn't much help

We just put our 333 inch stroker on the dyno. 536HP (flywheel) so a little 302 prolly won't get that high without some help. I did have a stock "short block" (The ole cam, heads, intake upgrade) 302 making 285 HP at the wheels though. Might be done, but easier to stroke it and/or spray it.

400+ N/A 302 is possible, but not cheap
400+ out of a 302 is definitely possible. Punch it out to 310ci (+0.060") and put a set of good aluminum heads on it with a decent intake (Performer RPM, SystemMax, etc.) and a good custom cam (AFM or FTI) and you'll be there. Either go with 30# injectors or a 650cfm carb. Compression anywhere above 9.8:1 with these parts will get you 400hp.
It may not be up your alley, but my Street Warrior combination makes around 575hp at the crank. Its a 308ci with TFS Twisted Wedge heads flowing about 300cfm/240cfm. I've got a custom AFM .500" lift hydraulic roller cam at 250/250 @ .050", with an unported Edelbrock Victor Jr intake and a Holley 650cfm 4150HP carburetor. Headers are 1-3/4" Kooks with 3" exhaust through some Dynomax race magnum bullets. My compression is around 13:1 with flat-topped pistons. Now I'm spinning it past 8500rpm frequently, but we've built many more tame street versions that make more than 425hp on the engine dyno and are real daily drivers, have good street manners and get decent mileage. It can be done, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. No spray needed!

Jeff, if you want to try an 8 degree split, I've got a NIB AFM 250/258. I've never run it, and I havent really found a market to sell these goofy cams we have.

302 to 400 hp
i would say its possible with some money... bore it out n put a nice set of forged pistons in , maybe bump the compression up a lil. A nice set of H/C/I . a nice 4 barrel, some exhaust. and some other extras should put you a solid 400 or so at the flywheel.
Some machine work to the heads and intake would help to. And then of course if u wanted more power , theres always stroker kits!!! |

I have a friend going 12.20's at 115 mph on a stock 302 bottom end, in a Fox Body GT. AFR 165's/TFS #1/Holley intake, shorty headers, some weight reduction, and a manual rack and no A/C. He's gotta be close.

Nope, pump gas. 306ci bottom end with box stock AFR 165, 30# injectors and Cobra intake with AFM cam made 427hp and 418 TQ with a very mild tune. Compression is less than 10:1 making it very streetable. This is just one example. 400+hp at the crank is a very reasonable goal for a 302-based motor. All it takes is a very sound approach to matching the components. The 93 Cobra that this particular motor went into runs 11.6's all day long with a C4 trans on E/T Streets, then cruises home and on to the car shows where its a real eye popper. If I recall, peak HP was around 5400rpm and peak torque more around 4200-4400rpm....very respectable....the car runs with the stock 6250 rev limiter. Still has the full interior including the heavy leather Cobra seats and heavy stock hood, etc. Probably weighs in at 3200+ with the driver. The guy doesn't own a trailer.
As I said, all it really takes is good matching of components. The place where most people leave the most on the table is in the camshaft selection. Stay away from the lettered cams and generic catalog cams.....there's HP and manners to be found in a good custom cam and it'll only cost about $100 more.
