600 vs 750 carb
i have a neighbor that tells me that in a ols hot rod magazine they dyno tested 2 carbs on 3 different motors( chevy ford and mopar)(so he says) and tells me that the artical was called over carburating??? any ways acording to him they all had identical set ups_cam ,intake ,headers ,and heads.they 600 made more hp than the 750.does anyone esle recall this artical or think this is true? all motors were 350-351-360 cid.

I don't know about the article, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit so long as the engines weren't heavily modified. Bigger is not always better, and a 600cfm carb setup is more than enough for most smallblocks.

Oh how true. Just for a point of comparison, my Warrior motor is 315ci with a 263/281 solid roller cam spinning to more than 9000 on the shifts. I use a 650cfm Holley 4150hp carb.

Agreed. A big carb is usually used to hide mistakes made when matching engine components during the build. A well built engine is often more powerful with a smaller carb.

Put me on the "agree" list as well!
Horsepower TV just installed an engine dyno, and tried MANY different combinations on the same engine, even if it was a "brand X" small block. Bigger is NOT always better. They actually lost power with a bigger carb. Lost power with a set of HUGE tube headers. Honestly it was one of their better shows I've seen!

I reccommend you go buy the book Holley; Carburetors, manifolds and Fuel Injection. A good book with lots of useful information. I got mine used (looks brand new though) through amazon.com for like $5, $9 total including shipping. Well worth it.

I am sure yall are correct about over carbing an engine. I never see anything smaller than a 750 on the carbed 302's at the track. I tell them that sure is alot of carb for a 14 second car.
They all say the same thing every damn time. "You cant have too big of a carb, the engine only takes in as much air as it needs." With all of the carb questions I have seen lately it makes me glad i stayed fuel injection.

now too big of a header will lose power also- learned that years ago first hand- the onlything i could find for a 351 is 1 3/4. i should be ok w/ that.
the rest of my set up is a extreme comp cam xe284h performer rpm air gap 1.6 roller rockers keith black flat top w/ 2 valve releifs pro comp 190cc aluminum heads bbk 1 3/4 long tube headers 350 dp holley or maybe a demon if i find a deal. anything anyone would change? |
