Cobra Intake problem
I just put on a new Cobra intake on my 90 essentially stock motor. Nothing else was added but the intake. Well, it runs pretty well, but there is a noticable bog when you first start out. Used to be i could nail it in first on a rolling start and it would have perfect acceleration. Now, it bogs and then takes off; but even when it takes off, it does not seem to have the same torque that it did before when it was fully stock. Is that because it needs a bigger throttle body to let more air in? Idle is perfect and runs great at constant highway speed. thanks

Re: Cobra Intake problem
The cobra intake is actually a very good intake for low end torque so it should not make your car bog.
Go back over all the basics. If you pulled the distributor to remove the intake make sure the timing is set where it is supposed to be. Also check your TPS voltage.

Re: Cobra Intake problem
Actually, even though the cobra is a good intake, it is not as good for low-mid range power )idle~3,500 rpm) as the stock intake. I am not surprised at all that you noticed the loss, but the bog is not normal and indicates you have a problem to find. Once corrected, some of the loss you feel may come back.

Re: Cobra Intake problem
thanks. Buddy of mine thought a new chip reprogrammed to add more fuel at lower rpm might work.

Re: Cobra Intake problem
Don't waste your money on a chip right now, it's not the issue and it is rather expensive.

Re: Cobra Intake problem
Back when I had a stockish motor with an explorer intake which is basicly the same thing as a cobra intake I didnt notice any negatives just positives.
By changing only the intake. I went from a stock intake to an explorer intake and went from a 14.79 @93mph to a 14.46 @95mph. The bog/loss of low end torque is not intake related IMO.

Re: Cobra Intake problem
thanks. you had said to also check the TPS voltage. what is that and how do I check? forgot to mention that i also had the heads cleaned up, shot peaned, mangafluxed and valves cleaned and new guides. could something in the head not be synched up right causing the hesitation? thanks.

Re: Cobra Intake problem
Sounds like timing to me, what's it set at right now? All the chip is gonna do is bump your timing anyway,

Re: Cobra Intake problem
Figured it out. Stinking gasket was not the right one. started hearing noise like the fan belt was old, dried out and squeaky. had it replaced (needed to anyway) and noise was still there. took it in and they diagnosed the vacum problem and determined which gasket was causing the problem. (had to take the intake off to tell) ordered the correct intake gasket, replaced, and no bog at all. runs like a champ.
