Post Ring and Pinion 373's

A buddy of mine found a set of 373's at an auto salvage. When he went over to pick them up, they tried to sell them to him without the pinion. When he asked where it was, they said you can use the same pinion that is in the car now (He has 273's). I've never heard of that before, so he obviously didn't buy them.
Anyways, the salvage place called him back an hour later and said they found one. He thinks they are trying to rip him off. Are the pinions branded like the ring gear? How can you tell? Does the 273 pinion fit?

What kind of car did you find 3.73's out of? How much did they ask for? I have turtle gears(2.73's) like you and will be looking for some gears too.

I think you need the pinion that came with the ring. Not only are there different numbers of teeth, but the wear pattern would be way off if you used a ring from one set and a pinion from another. I would not get them.

To know if your pinion will work with the 3.73 ring, find out how many teeth your pinion has (I don't know off the top of my head). Then count the number of teeth on the ring. Divide the number of teeth on the ring by the number of teeth on your pinion and you should get 3.73. If you don't, then your pinion won't work with the gear.

However, I would not buy a ring and pinion seperately. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't buy a used ring and pinion unless I knew for sure it was a matched set because of the different wear patterns. If you do, then you will end up with lots of extra shavings in your rearend and the ring and pinion will wear out prematurely.

Beware of these kind of scoundrels!!! The pinion has markings on the head of which include the ratio. Also, dividing the # of ring gear teeth by the # of pinion gear teeth equals the ratio. Never mix and match an R&P set. In order to obtain max. life and tolerable noise levels you should stick with a new set. The FMS gears are reasonably priced and easiest to set-up.

Thanks guys. Stanger8172 The gears are out of a 92 LX that was rolled 5 or 6 times. He took almost all of the parformance parts off before it went to the salvage yard.
