Post Engine Swap

I've got an 86LX 3.8L Stang. I also have 351W motor that I am getting for free. I plan to rebuild the whole motor. I was wondering if anyone know what rear end and tranny is in the 86 V-6. The tranny is a 3-speed automatic. Someone has told me that this it is a C-5. I also plan to do mucho body strengthing. Planing at least a 6pt. cage. The motor is out of a 86 E-250. And is seized (thats why it's free). The guy is pretty sure the block is not cracked. And knows for a fact that it did not throw a rod. If anyone can help let me know

The V6 should have a 7.5" rear end...not too sturdy when you throw 351-style torque at it. Good news is 8.8" rears are quite abundant and easy to install. C5s are pretty good transmissions...even if they don't have a huge aftermarket and were only made for a few years. Just be sure to check that motor up and down for damage. If it seized that means it probably ran out of oil or lost pressure or something. That can really f!ck up a block.

I was planning on bringing the block in for some testing and work. If a pistone seized I was planing on going .030 over and going oversized rings and such. Can't pass it up for free. I could just part out the heads for around $100 for the pair.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you have have to change the k-member in that car if it originally came with a 6 cyl also. I'm not real familiar with the C5 but I have seen some of those tranny parts grouped with the C4's-Not positive but I think it was converters. I believe I saw this at artcarr.com

The only K-member that has to be changed is the early 80's cars that came with the straight six(ran into this with a 79 Zephyr-don't laugh). The 4,V-6, and 8 K-member are all the same. If you are looking at maximum wieght savings though, yank out the stock one and drop a tubular k-frame into it.
