Question Roll Cage

Has anybody built there own? I have access to a bender and a notcher, and can weld good enough to get it to a shop to have the final welds put on. Do ya'al think it is worth it, or am I going to spend more on raw materials than I can buy one for? Thanks for the input.

Why exatly do you want one? I was under the impression that they're kinda overkill for a street car that's not a 'vert. They do add some chassis rigidity, but so do subs....and for a fraction of the cost.

S&W offers a 6/8 pt for $149.00. I would think that would be hard to beat in terms of raw materials and your time just to cut/notch/bend/fit your own. Its what I've got in my car. If you watch their site religiously, you'll see they run a $99 deal about twice a year.

You can see my S&W kit at our site under the Tech Articles area.

Yes, it may be overkill in a "street car", but I have a 351 that I am building and have every intention of busting the magic 11.99 barrier. And I have seen a 13 second car wreck at a track, and to me, a cage is a worthwile investment on any car that is raced.

A roll bar(6 pt.) is a very good idea if you're going to the track often. I have seen 13 sec. cars roll at the track as well. A roll bar will definitely help with chassis flex, sub-frames will not do it alone. But the do help. If you're planning the 11 sec. zone you'll need at least a 6 pt. bar anyways. If you install an 8pt. you'll be good down into the 10's. Those Tech. guys will look your car over pretty good in the lanes. They'll tell you what you need and don't need when it comes to your bar. If you know somebody with a N.H.R.A. rulebook, it'll tell you everything you need to know about how to build your bar. I recommend also to just buy the bar from S&W, it'll be cheaper in the long run. If you do go S&W, then spend the extra $30.00 and get the 8 pt. because you know you'll want to go faster later.

Man, the magic 11.99 barrier. I'm glad to see there is still some sanity left in the world I wuz getting the impression that anything less than a high 9 second car was for little punk 16 year olds with a DL still warm from the laminator. Then again people like to bull...errr...bench race alot don't they.

I just bought a S&W 8pt for my 91 GT becasue I know I'll be past the magic 11.99 barrier this spring, they were having a sale $109.00, I lived close enough to pick it up which saved a lot of money in shipping cost, I bought the swing out kit since my car see's a lot of street duty.

If the track you are going to run at is strict they will enforce NHRA regulations. Which are: Roll bar for covertable runing faster then 13.99s, and other cars at 11.99s it is acceptable for cars running as low as 10.00s. aslong as no mod has been done to the firewall and floorboards. If the f/w of floor was moded, then a full cage is required beginning at 10.99s. Full cage required if your running 9.99s or faster and 135mph or faster (regardless of et). These are NHRA specs and if you are 9.99s or 135mph or faster your cage has to be inspected and certified every 3 years.

Man the 10.99 barrier. I'll have to settle for the 11.99 for now. Don't think I'll be breaking that one anytime soon. Thanks for the breakdown of the rules though. Definatly good info to know.
