Question U joints? or driveshaft?

Well after spending 6 hours stripping, sanding and primering the Rustang, I was driving home, and after I took off at a light, I noticed a vibration coming from the tranny, that has began to shake the whole car. I've asked around, and I'm hearing anything from transmisson mount, to driveshaft loose, to U joints. The car has over 100k miles, and this just started last night. It has been raining, so I haven't even bothered to look under the car.

Also, I had some problems with my emergency brake bracket. I was..well *ahem* mad once, and pulled the e-brake handle up so hard that I ripped the bracket out of the floorboard, and it was scraping the driveshaft. I doubt scrapage could alter the d/s performance in ANY way, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks!

You have a siezed or partially siezed U-joint. It needs to be replaced immediately before you bend or damage your T-5's tailshaft.

A loose d/s would cause a serious clunk along with a vibration, a broken tranny mount will clunk upon changes between acceleration and deceleration. Since you have no clunk, those aren't the problems.

While the driveshaft can cause a vibration from throwing a weight (technically possible), you will not notice it at low speeds.

I had a bad vibration shaking the whole car back in january. My front ujoint was busted, and I'm lucky that it didn't come apart, drop to the road and catapult my car. It took me awhile to find that was the problem, and it sounds like that is your problem. I drove around with that for MUCH TOO LONG, so get it fixed before something bad happens darlin :-). Just use that as an excuse to get a nice shiny aluminum driveshaft.

If the vibration increases with RPM and is not specific to a particular gear, or comes in at a specific RPM despite the gear, I would check the fan clutch. Mine went out at about 100k and caused the whole driveline and motor to shake. Too me a while to find it... just a suggestion.

It is important to determine if the vibration occurs in every gear at a certain RPM, if it occurs throughout the RPM range, or if it only occurs in a certain gear.

If it's the first and you hear a ticking sound behind and to the right of you, it is probably the u-joint. If it is, spend the $150 and buy an aluminum drive shaft. It's a great price, easy install, and will gain you a little power.

If it's not at a specific RPM and in all gears, let us know what the complete symptoms are.

I broke my emergency brake cable a few years ago and probably won't replace it until I upgrade to Baer brakes. My guess is that the things are siezed by now anyway.

Starting in 94 the Mustangs no longer have a fan clutch...FYI.
