Unhappy Torque Convertor Help

Is bigger better concerning torque convertors??
I have a 2400 stall convertor and a B&M AOD tranny
But i have a stock cam - do i need a cam to match it?
I have a 1968 stang w/ 5.0L EFI swap and i got killed by a camaro this weekend ..i cant have that so im wondering if a stock convertor would do me better w/ the stock motor that i have??

the torque converter is designed to keep the engine in it's power band.

stock converters are'nt designed to do that..

what year engine?

302's have a lot of breathing restrictions, cam's, intake, heads and exhaust help these motors tremendously.

also; what gears are you running in the rear end??

In my opinion gears would be the best money spent, and the most noticable change..

2400 rpm seems about right for a basically stock motor. Maybe a 2800 would have been a bit better, but your converter should help out a lot more then the stock one. Right now on a stock motor, you probably not seeing a true stall speed of 2400 rpms. As you modify your car and are able to put out more HP then the true stall speed of the converter will be closer to its advertised stall speed.

First thing I would do is find out what gears you have in the rear. If their highway gears then they are not intended for performance. An easy way to check the ratio is by putting the rear up the car up on jack stands. Turn the tire one revolution, and watch the driveshaft to see how many times it turns. This will tell you your axle ratio.

Now what year Camaro beat your, Newer or older? The newer ones are pretty quick. How bad did you get beat?

Ok haha it goes like this im waiting on light to turn green so i can turn left - camaro behind me i think nothing of it ( it was a newer model btw ) i turn left and was gonna go into far right lane but his dumb*** decides to try and speed up real fast and get into the lane before me and my rear end almost clips him as i got into the right lane

then up comes the light i drop into first cos im kinda mad im thinkin what the hell i put 300 miles on this tranny already its good enough ( we ordered it brand new from summit ) so i give it a little gas at he light and he didnt do anything at first but then he punches it and i was slow to react and i stepped on it late - my front bumper was right behind the rear wheel when i caught him and i stayed with him but then he very slowly started pulling on me so i let off cos i didnt think i was gonna win + the street i went on is real bad for cops, i shouldnt have done it in the first place anyways he probably thought i was some kinda pansy cos i turned off into wendys to get some grub (my original intent)

sos i lost my first race that whole last weekend it kept eating at me ...i must get him next time ...i cant have that happen again
