Getting into the 13's?
When my 3:55's are installed and my timing is bumped up to 14 instead of 10 now do you think I can hit the 13 sec. mark? (my posi might work after the gear swap, if it doesn't than I will buy one drag radial on the right rear)
I plan on racing at the track in early October. Can I get kicked off the track for hitting 13's??? ------------------ '91 LX convertible , T-5, Centerforce Dual Friction, FMS adjustable cable w/quadrant, 3:55's(not installed yet), ported/polished/milled E7 heads, 1.6rr, 1.94/1.60 stainless valves, March Performance Pulleys and A/C Eliminator, short belt, Home Depot ram air, K&N, battery in trunk, glasspacks w/turndowns, 225/50/16 Re 730's |

for about $80 you can get new clutches for your diff and rebuild it...
putting a drag radial on one side? wouldn't that make the other side spin?? depends on the track whether or not you'd be booted... (I haven't ran my car, the closest track is 140+ miles from home) ------------------ Black,84 GT,ground effects, shorty headers, 'open' dual exh.,302 HO(no pollution control crap)bored .060, 10.5" clutch, T5,89 ported heads, edelbrock Performer manifold, Edelbrock 2122 cam, 600 Holley, high volume oil pump, front P235/60/R15's, rear P245/60/R15's..... Some day (3:73 gears & N2O)!!! will this ever end???? |

The track here (ihra) requires a helmet 13.99 or better, i believe a cage must be installed once you run the 11.99 mark, but i could be wrong about that, dont worry about the rear end, rebuild would be nice, but mine does the one wheeler sometimes, but when i launch off the track it seems they both bite, and stay out of the waterbox with radials.
Pull your front swaybar and you should be in the 13's, but hard to say since i dont know you, or your car, anyhow good luck, and let us know. ------------------ 90 lx coupe: 5spd, 177k miles, steeda water pump pulley, Mac coldair fenderwell, Mac h-pipe, supercoil, ADS chip, 160 stat, aluminum D/S, Black magic fan, 3.27grs. Yes, the swaybar is removed. Ram air is now installed since the 15.1 time. After the 3:55's are installed I just want to hear of someone saying that they have been there and done that.

I would think you would be in the 13's, but 3:55's aren't going to knock a second off. Good luck, and have fun!

well...been there done that, except my car is lighter, my story: i was running 14.9-15.0 spinning, got some better tires went 14.6-7's pulled sway, went 14.4, got an electric fan and coldair induction, went 13.9 best, but usually go about 14.0-14.1.
Oh and just need a helmet for a 13 sec run, no cage necessary, but i forgot you have a vert, so you need one i guess. get some dragradials and nail a 1.9 60' and you should be close. What was you mph before? ------------------ 90 lx coupe: 5spd, 177k miles, steeda water pump pulley, Mac coldair fenderwell, Mac h-pipe, supercoil, ADS chip, 160 stat, aluminum D/S, Black magic fan, 3.27grs. a driveshaft saftey loop is also required, along with a helmet if you break 13s.
good luck! |

yea, but they never seem to check for a safety loop, maybe if your competing, but on test and tune over here, they dont check, now if you roll up with big slicks and a loping idle, they might go ahead and look.

Forget the 3.55:1 gearset and step up to a 3.73:1. Your LX is heavy and it needs more gear off the line. One more tip, Drag radials! You want 13's, right.

I too am running ported/milled E7 heads and 1.6 roller rockers, but I am also running an F303 cam, GT-40 intake, 24lb injectors, C&L 76mm MAS, 65mm TB, pullies, full exhaust with long tubes, a/c and smog pump delete, battery in hatch, etc. My car went a best of 13.73 with one tire spinning and stock gears and this setup. After the gears and the T-lock rebuild I'd guess it's a very low 13 second car on street tires. If I were you I'd ditch the glass packs and go with some free-flowing mufflers. And definately rebuild the T-lock while you are doing the gears. It just makes sense to do it now. You'll be glad you did.

If you tell me your best previous MPH, then I can tell you if you have a shot at the 13's. Put it this way, without DR's or slicks, if your not running like 99mph or so, its not going to happen, unless you can pull a 1.9 60' out of your street tires, but 99% of people can not do this in a 5.0. I hit 13.83 at 98.55mph in my 95GT convertible, but that was with an edelbrock intake, 65mm T-body, full exhaust, pulleys, 13* timing, 3.73 gears, and Nitto dr's with 1.91 60's. Now with heads, cam, and a few other goodies I've jumped to a 12.92 at 106.85mph with a 1.85 60'.
P.S.- I have details on my website as to what each mod netted in the 1/4, from stcok till now. JFYI- An offroad X pipe, 3.73's, 13* timing and HD clutch took me from 15.2 at 90mph to 14.96 at 91.5mph. I mentioned only using one drag radial before cause I can only get the RR to spin. If, after the gear change, both of them spin then I will get two.
My mph with that 15.1 was at 93.39, .624 RT, a 2.510 60', and a 9.896 1/8 mi. Since then I have added the ram air, pulled the sway bar, and put the battery in the trunk. The gears are next. A Lakewood safety loop is installed. The 3:55's have to stay because I am planning on getting an engagement ring for my g/f! Hmmn, maybe I could surprise her with a 3:55 ring GEAR! It would be a really cool ring!!! ------------------ '91 LX convertible , T-5, Centerforce Dual Friction, FMS adjustable cable w/quadrant, 3:55's(not installed yet), ported/polished/milled E7 heads, 1.6rr, 1.94/1.60 stainless valves, March Performance Pulleys and A/C Eliminator, short belt, Home Depot ram air, K&N, battery in trunk, glasspacks w/turndowns, 225/50/16 Re 730's |

IHRA rules call for a cage at 13.49 and faster in a 'vert, not 13.99 and faster like the NHRA.
With the mods you've got you ought to be in the 13's, but don't expect to run a 13 if the fastest you managed before was 15.1. ------------------ 1989 LX 5.0 Coupe 13.30's @ 106.7 while doing the aod shuffle...needs gear and converter. 1992 LX 5.0 Convertible Moderator SN95.com, Stangtec.com |

Putting new gears in isn't going to do much for your one wheel peel problem. In fact it will probably make it worse. You need to rebuild your traction lock if you have this problem. Gears don't have anything to do with getting posi. And if you decide to go back and fix this later it will cost the same as having new gears put in more than likely.
IMO it would be very foolish to have gears put in without spending another $100 or so to have the T-lock rebuilt, especially if you have a problem already. Spinning one tire with the stock gears ain't sh!t compared to how much you'll spin with 3.55's. JMO. Oh, and I agree with Nitrous Al, you should at least step up tp 3.73's. ------------------ Gunning for 12's! Believe me I'd rather kill two birds with one stone. If they know how to rebuild it I could prob. afford it. This tech college only charges 10% of parts for the labor! They charged me $30 for the clutch, quadrant and rear main seal!
I asked the guy handing out the timeslips that night about having a roll cage and he said 13.999 so maybe it's just their rule. ------------------ '91 LX convertible , T-5, Lakewood driveshaft safety loop,Centerforce Dual Friction, FMS adjustable cable w/quadrant, 3:55's(not installed yet), ported/polished/milled E7 heads, 1.6rr, 1.94/1.60 stainless valves, March Performance Pulleys and A/C Eliminator, short belt, Home Depot ram air, K&N, battery in trunk, removed swaybar, glasspacks w/turndowns, 225/50/16 Re 730's |
