Use stock crank damper when rebuild?
Any reason not to re-use if it's not damaged?
I plan on having rotating assembly balanced. Also where is the cheapest rebuit kit with forged pistons? Summit? It is cheaper to buy kit than to get indvidual parts I suppose?

Re: Use stock crank damper when rebuild?
If you're just looking to rebuild your engine and not spend a whole hell of a lot of money, the summit kits are nice. IMO, if you are going to build a motor to race with, you'll be more satisfied with piecing it together from different companies. It is cheaper to buy a kit than to piece one together. And no reason not to re-use your stock balancer. When you get your assembly balanced, you will probably want to get a new one then.

Re: Use stock crank damper when rebuild?
i believe its PAW that probably would have the cheapest rebuild kit, i would imagine that they would have a kit with forged pistons. They have ads in pretty much every car mag. (at least the ones I look at)

save yourself a few hundred if you dont need a new dampner. stock should work fine.

Re: Use stock crank damper when rebuild?
At the least get a stock replacment unit. The rubber ring gets worn out over time, and if the balancer ring slips that will send the engine out of balance. Why damage a fresh rebuild over a $115 part Pioneer stock replacment balancer True it's not as cheap as a Chevy 350 unit, but what is??

Re: Use stock crank damper when rebuild?
Stock 5.0 HO balancers are 50 oz. Getting the assy balanced would be best done with the balancer and flywheel you plan to use. Otherwise they will use standard units for the job.
If you are replacing the crank etc you can get a different balance weight like 28 oz or even go with internal balance. The heavier external balance puts more stress on the bearings with all else being equal.
