Unhappy PVC and Oil?

I just changed out my pcv valve and found a significant amount of oil all over the valve and rubber grommet. The area around the pcv valve location was thickly caked with old oil and grime- these are all things I don't remember associated with my last pcv valve change 20,000 miles ago. Is this normal??

Also, I keep losing a quart of oil every couple thousand miles or so... could this be where it is all going? Could this possibly just be a clogged screen?

Ideas?

John

Did you use a Motorcraft PCV? The parts store ones don't fit tightly enough. Otherwise maybe time to change the screen underneath. I just changed mine it was nasty! A plugged up screen can cause excess pressure inside the motor and cause gaskets to fail!

A quart every thousand or two is pretty good, my brand new 91 would only get about 1500 on a quart and did not leak a drop!

No. You may have developed blow-by or possibly the PCV valve was not tight. You may also have a upper intake leak but not too likely if it wasn't disturbed.

It certainly could be a source of the oil loss but the PCV screen would have to be very clogged. Install a new PCV, screen and grommet and check it every few thousand to see if it's clogging/leaking as you also keep tabs on your oil consumption.
