Post 3G Alternator time - What do I need?

I can get a cheap 3G alternator, I know that much. What else is involved in the installation? I had a nice website that told everything but my bookmarks have since been erased. If anyone could direct me I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

There is an excellent tech article on www.corral.net.

At the bottom of the site click on "technical features," then click on "tech articles," then on "maintenance." At the bottom of that section there is a G3 130amp alternator upgrade article.

That'll give you all the info you need. It's a great upgrade, I did it myself.

I agree, it's a cool upgrade. Kicking out 14V at idle is much better than 10.5V. Basically all you need is a single spade connector (female), two eyelets that will fit over the +BAT post on the 3G and that accept 12ga wire, some good wire strippers/crimpers, some solder, a soldering iron, and some shrinkwrap. A Bic lighter is good to use to shrink the shrinkwrap. This is if your bracket on the car will fit the 3G. If not, you'll need a hacksaw and/or a Dremel tool. I had to trim a little piece out of the alt. bracket on mine.

Check out the corral site for some good instructions on this, though. Good luck!

I submitted a similar question when I first came to this forum and got a lot of good responses. Go to the "search" section here and search for "Hi-amp alternators". hope this helps

I read somewhere that if you get a 96 Aerostar 3.0 V6 130 amp alt you won't need to modify the bracket - I haven't be able to confirm this though.

Just a thought.

modifying the bracket consists of grinding a notch in it that take about 10 minutes max..i dont know how the corral has the instrutions now but i would go against them if they say to use the existing wire..you should run 4ga welding cable from the alternator to the starter soloniod..then you just have to jump one of the 3 wires to the new stator location on top of the alt..
