Default ~timing ????~

I HAVE A 95GT AND WAS WONDERING WHAT IS A DECENT NUMBER FOR FULL ADVANCE (TOTAL TIMING), MY BASE TIMING IS AT 10*. I ALSO HAVE THE PMS FROM AFM, SO I CAN ADJUST FROM IDLE-2000-2200-ECT........ RIGHT NOW THE PMS TELLS ME THAT AT WOT THROTTLE MY TIMING IS 41* I HAVE HEARD THAT 32-36 IS ALL YOU SHOULD GO. IF ANYONE HAS ANY INPUT PLEASE LET ME KNOW THANKS IN ADVANCE.

wow, that's a lot of timing at WOT, is your 95 pinging at WOT, especially when hot?
(however, the aluminum heads allow you to run a bit more timing thru-out the range)

your base could be at 14* w/ 94 octane gas, and you shouldn't have any problems..

missed the NOS part, if your total timing is 41* at WOT, and you hit the NOS, I'd think you'd blow the motor.. that seems wrong to me..

anyone else?

since i have the programmable computer i have to set my base timing at stock, then i can adjust it from there. (10*) and no it doesnt spark knock, even with 87octane in it. something is telling me that i have really low compression, and thats why i can run so much timing. my heads may need to be redone, i dont think you should be able to run 41* of total timing, and not have spark knock with 87 octane.

there must be something wrong, maybe thats why it kicks so hard when i hit the spray (low compression), oh by the way i have 10.1 trw forged pistons in there (.030 over)

The knock sensor detects pinging and it retards the timing until it stops ...thats the beauty of the computer ! but it can also keep you from knowing where you're really at .... and yes 41 degrees is to much timing ! I doubt anything past 36 would be productive.

I use a PMS w/ nitrous... right now I've got 36* total @ WOT with AR3932 (cold) Autolite Racing plugs. On a 150 shot everything works pretty good, no problems. I'm working on getting a 200 shot dialed in... not sure where the tune is gonna go from here, but that's what I run at the moment.

do you think something could be wrong, i can run 41* of total timing on 87 octane gas, without it spark knocking. HOT RODDIN- i dont think the 95's had knock sensors, i think the 4.6's started that. i think i have a problem with low compression, since i cant get it to spark knock, no matter what gas i use, and what the timing is set at. i also spray it at 41* of total timing and it loves it, i would have thought the motor would have grenaded by now.

What kind of plugs are you using when you spray? ...NOS 125... you run a dry kit? As for timing... are you looking at the display screen before you cross the quarter mile and seeing 41*? Reason I ask is when my car is at idle the timing bounces around from 34-45* I don't see where 41* is bad considering you run alum. heads (I too run ported RPM heads) and aren't experiencing any knocks or pings. I'd drop it down to 38 and see how the motor likes it there next time you make a pass at the track to compare MPH and ET between the two settings... somewhere to start. That should give you an idea on whether or not you even need to run that much timing...

What is your compression ratio btw? I don't recall reading what it is, other than you saying that its low... (edit) I found it! 10.1 isn't really that low, it's not really that high either

Also, what do your plugs look like after you make a pass on nitrous... should be choclate brown to a light ash gray

it is a dry kit, and my compession ratio is supposed to be 10.1 with my pistons and heads. also anytime i am at wot the pms reads 41*-43* of total timing. whether it be 3000rpms or 6500rpms. i think i have something wrong cause it just doesnt seem right. i had a 89lx that would spark knock when i put the timing past 14* base. and this one wont knock with even 16*base timing on 87 octane. plus the car just doesnt seem to pull very hard any more, like its lost a lot of power. for some reason i keep thinking i have a bad headgasket, or my heads need to be redone. about every 2 weeks i lose about an inch of water out of my reservoir, but there is no sign of it in the oil, and it doesnt smoke. i dont know, im going to cordova for the ford show, ill probably just pick up a 331 or 347 kit and be done with it, and b 4 i put it all in i will replace all the sensors.

Cordova is the track I frequent... going there wed. 7/24/02 if you're interested. I will also be at the FFW event.

Where is Oak Forest relative to Peoria?

I ran 18* of initial timing w/ 93 octane with my old e7 headed combo before I started spraying nitrous... then I ran 14* and 2 steps colder plugs.

I'd run a compression check and a cooling system pressure check if I were you to see what's up with your coolant problem...

Depending on how Wed night goes, I'll be at Cordova Fri night as well... thinking about staying the weekend for the PRO event that is going to take place Sat. and Sun.

As for plugs.... an Autolite 3924 is the recommended heat range for the alum heads, so you'd want to get 3923 and 3922 in reg. Autolite or AR3933 and AR3932 in the Autolite Racing plug. I still have a bunch of new 3923's... I've been playing with the AR plugs mentioned. Also, I tried some NGK's that seem to work pretty good... hard number to remember, though I can get those numbers for you also, if you want. Or you can call them... I can post their phone number after I dig it up. Nitrous Express referred me to NGK just last week so I'm new to their part numbers... shouldn't take too long, I'll be back

OK... the number for NGK is 1-877-473-6767 ...ask for John

Right now I have R5671A-10 plugs gapped @ .035 ...they cross over to an AR3932. John recommend that I try a BKR 7E ...this plug has a projected tip compared to the 10's I run now and is supposed to take care of my hazing condition with the 200 shot. I upgraded from a 6AL and Nology coil to a Digital 7 plus box and HVC-2 coil to put some more fire in the hole before I try the hotter plugs... maybe I'll catch you at Cordova and check out your combo.
