something just doesnt feel *right*
Well as some of you may know from my other posts I recently put 500 miles on my new motor. I punched it and it went fast... or so I thought. My buddy who was in the car with me said he wasn't impressed, he thought a heads cam intake 5.0 should do better. I was just sick and tired of babying my ride around town. The more I've been punching it the more I realize it really should have more power. It's definitely not slow, but I think it was faster with the blower. (I had a 10 lbs intercooled procharger with bone stock EVERYTHING) So now I'm a bit confused. Since this motor is brand new I have nothing to compare it against. With stock convertible gears (2.73's or 3.08's, i'm not sure) how fast should it really be going? Also, what things can I check that would cause a loss in power. It idles fine with a tad bit of a surge (nothing terrible). Doesnt overheat. Am I just feeling the convertible automatic blues?

Man, i noticed some heads and cam 5.0's actually feel slower in the lower rpms, especially ported heads, and big cams, in this case, the gears are a must.
with a vert, get 4.10, your buddy will have to change his underwear when you punch it and probaly go sideways! i had 3.08's, now 3.27's, and they just plain suck, i drove my friends coupe with 4.10's, and know for sure im getting at least 373 ratio now, they would wake your car up so much.......also, some verts came with 3.27's, mine came out of a vert donor, but my car is light, and 5spd, so i can make the best out of these 3.27 turtle gears.

Relax your grip a little. Sorry, I couldn't resist. You definately need 4.10's. They will make a HUGE difference. I'm not sure why you are using such big injectors, but I doubt they are really hurting anything. The thing to keep in mind is that if you were running 10 pounds of boost before, that's exactly the same as having very lightweight 500 cubic inch engine, and I personally would expect that to be faster than what you've got now. Anyway, get the gears. You'll be much happier. Take care, ~Chris

I do ALOT of highway driving, would 3.73's be worth the switch. Also, chris: with my pistons, what kind of nitrous shot could I run safely. I mean VERY safely... i dont want to blow this one up too...

Also, what, besides the gearset, do I need to install ring and pinion gears? DO I need an installation kit of somekind? Can I reuse my old stuff?

With an AOD, and the added weight of being a 'vert, 4.10's would be a better choice, IMO, but 3.73's would still be a large improvement. BTW, these are the ring and pinion gears, and installation kits are available, but you would probably be wise to have them installed for you.
You could very safely use a 75 shot nitrous kit, and even a 125, provided you tune the engine accordingly, use high enough octane fuel, and are well versed in how to use nitrous. Take care, ~Chris

I may look into the nitrous thing. with a 25.6285 inch tall tire + 4.10's + automatic, what RPMs would I be turning at 65 on the highway?
Also, I found out my car has 3.27'a (door code). Do the 3.73's still seem worth it?

So I did a cylinder balance test on my car, and the computer returned "2 pause 2" which I assume is cylinder number 2 (just repeated). Its not the plug, wire, or fuel injector. When your car fails this type of test, what are some things to look into fixing?

If the results are good, it's either the spark or the fuel that is weak in that cylinder. Testing is pretty basic. Take care, ~Chris

Go 4.10s! You are definately feeling the vert/AOD blues. AODs are dogs enough, and I see you have a stock converter and AOD from your sig.? You wont go anyewhere fast until you upgrade those gears and converter to get that pig out of the hole and moving...
I have an AOD with 4.10s (non-lockup) and drive on the highway all the time. It burns a little extra fuel, but it sure is nice to feel the back of the seats when the pedal on the right side is mashed to the boards |

I would go ahead and get the 4.10's but I might be making the AOD-T5 swap in the future. Which stall converter would work well with 4.10's if I decided to go that route?

2800 rpm stall stallion from Precision Industries works very well in stang applications.
