Eastern Massachusetts Gears?
I went to one shop near me and the guy wanted about 350$ to install gears in my 89 GT... that was a rough quote.. but i still think that's high compared to the 200 I hear everyone else talk about... I know stuff around here tends to be expensive... and most general repair shops dont touch rear ends, even alot of tranny shops dont. I wanted to know if
A) Anyone knew of a reputable place in the greater boston area B) Anyone from this board wanted to come do the gears with me (for a price of course)

It cost $160-200 for the gears themselves. Who on this board knows a shop that's installing for free?
$350 is a good price. Cuz the closest race shop to me, MPE Racing in Taunton, MA (not far from you) wants $400. Or maybe that's 'cuz they also do the clutch pack. Which you should have rebuilt while you're there.

$350 is cheap!
The shop where I had mine done in westfield MA (Wzorek), charged me 700 for everything. Thats gears, shims, turning the axles, bearings, fixed broken clutches, speedo gear, gear oil etc. They are also considered to be one of the best in the area, its where everyone recomends to go.

Perhaps I need to clear things up... he wanted 350$ for the INSTALL ALONE.... that's after I buy the gears for around 200$ I would imagine

MPE Racing in Taunton, MA on RT140 is a very good shop, been around for a long time and do quality work. They do not skimp on anything. They ordered and put in my King Cobra and replaced the pilot bushing, rear main, resurfaced the flywheel and put Redline D4 into my tranny for $550.
They put 3.73's and an aluminum driveshaft in my buddy's mustang and also replaced his bearings, turned his rotors and put new shoes on for $600. www.mperacing.com Sorry I didn't read that right. Hope you get a good deal somewhere!!

That soesn't sound like too bad of a deal. The local shop here wanted $700 just for the gears and install. He said nothing about shims, turning the axles, speedo gears, or anything else. Just gears and install. Needless to say, I laughed and walked away.

I live in the same area as you and I used to live really close to MPE racing in Taunton. They do seem a tid bit high priced but not enough to go shopping around for. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you get what you pay for. The guys there do great work and I will definitely go there when I have money for my gears. I have a 95 GT and they gave me a quote of about $550 for parts and labor and they are going to fix the speedo gear as well. I would check them out. It can't hurt to call them to get a quote. I'm sure that it will be a different price for a 89, that is what it sounded like when I was talking to them at least.

Well 550 for parts and labor pretty much equates to the same thing as my 200$ parts and 350$ labor... so I guess I can use this local guy, who people tell me is the guy to go to for FORD or I can check out these guys in taunton. I just hear of all these people saying 150-200 for install .. so I thought this guy was way off.. I have to remember, EVERYTHING here in the northeast is more expensive then anywhere else.... ah well
