Default ordering heads...which to buy..please help

I am ordering new heads this week im just debating on what to buy. Ultimately i want to break in the 11's on the motor before i add a power adder. With the combo in my sig i have been a 13.03 @103.5. Ive been debating between...

AFR 165 58cc 1.90 1.60 valves (emission legal or not??)
Trick Flow TW 61cc 2.02 1.60 valves

which will i make more power with? Im also adding a 76mm maf because i still have the stock sensor and of course port match the intake.

What kind of quarter times do you think i will be looking at with the new set up?

Im also open to any other suggestions on heads or am willing to buy used heads if anybody is selling some good used heads.

thanks for the help

I would go with the AFR 185's instead of the 165's.

the 185's are too big for a 302 unless a stroker or a blower is in the future.

165s are great heads. There are numerous guys out there making well over 300rwhp with them, which is good for high 11's or better with a good driver and hook.

The cobra intake you have, unless well ported, will be holding you slightly back of your goal, but by no means is it impossible with it.

You will also need a more aggressive cam. I'd look into a custom grind from Ed Curtis of Flowtech Induction, or one of Rick Anderson's hi-rev cam/valvespring setups.

In an unported comparison, the AFR's will outflow the TFS heads, but I've heard that the TFS's can be ported to be a better head than the AFR's.

The emissions part really has to do with where you live. If you have smog testing, then get the legal ones. If not, get the non legal ones, and delete your EGR

good luck,
-drew

Thanks for the advice. I actually emailed Ed Curtis yesterday so im waiting to hear back from him. Im planning on getting a new intake soon also. What intake would u recommend? i was considering either the holley systemax or the victor 5.0. Eventually i plan on putting a mild supercharger on it. Probably just a 6 or 9psi powerdyne but that will be a little while til i purchase that. I figure if i get it in the 11's on the motor it wont take much boost to make it fly since its already in the 11's.

thanks for the help

I more thing. Do the non emission legal heads flow much better than the emission legal ones? I dont even have cats or an air pump on my car so i know im not gonna pass emissions anyway. Im just gonna have to spend the money to get a waiver. So if the non emissions head flows noticabley better ill just go ahead and get that and delete the egr.

thanks for the help

The emissions legal heads wont flow any better than the nonlegal ones.

I'd go with the Systemx if I were you, or wait until January for the Edelbrock Performer RPM II comes out. I talked to one of their reps at the PRI show over the weekend, and this intake on a NA 5.0L with edelbrock heads made 22hp over the former performer RPM and 5hp more than the Holley! The design of the upper really resembles the Holley as well. Its a nice lookin piece.

Sounds like you've got a good motor plan going, but now whats the current setup or plan for suspension to get all that power down? I get a kick out of it when I race people at the track with these high-dollar motor combo's and I beat them with my ported E7 combo, the looks on their faces when I tell them what it is is priceless

As far as suspension work goes I have...

Southside lower lift bars
lake wood struts
strut tower brace
Lower K frame brace
FMS drag springs
and i have a set of rims with good years slicks on them and i have 275/60/15 goodyears radials for the street. I have had a 1.76 60ft with my current set up.

Coupe Devil- Im planning on selling the gt-40 heads after i get the news on there. Just make me and offer. I bought the car with them on it....supposidly they have less than 10K on them and I dont know of any port work done to them but wont be sure til i pull them.

5ohpatrol is right on the intake, the Holley is a great intake. The only thing that I feel you need to look at is the matching of the system. Basicly when does the cam tell the engine when it needs shifted ? The cam I have now is a high rpm cam. It wouldn't work to well if I tried to spin 7500 rpm with a Gt-40 style intake. Thats where the Holley helps out. If I had an engine that I shifted at 6000 rpm, I would try the Cobra out first, especially if its a street car, you will love the low end torque that it will produce. I have friends who run 10.60's with the cobra. My self, in the sig, that was done with a ported lower and a GT-40 intake shifting at 5800 rpm.
