I just bought a 88 GT that already had the mass air conversion done to it. It is a god only knows how many miles motor that is completely stock except it has a aftermarket cam. My problem is it runs very rich. It lets out a cloud of black smoke when I get on it and is extermely rich at idle. The only codes are related to missing smog pump and thermatcor (sp?) valves and from the conversion 81,81,95. Do you think it is the cam or shoud I look somewhere else. The guy I got the car from had no clue how to work on one and I spend most of my time undoing what he did. any help would be appreciated.

PS the bap sensor was dead code 22 I replaced it and the code went away but it still runs rich and slow

I'm not sure if there is another problem or not, but W would suggest an AFPR and a air/fuel ratio guage. I'm unsure what to set the fuel pressure at, but someone can help you with that. If it is another problem, have that fixed first, or over time it will cause other problems. Just a thought.

Get it dyno tuned with a custom chip burned.

The fuel pressure with vacum off if is 42psi. It has a stock regulator with a 190lph fuel pump. I don't want to get it dyno tined or a custom chip or anything because this motor is temporary till I can save up money a new one. But I would like it to run better at least as good as a stock motor.

It is set a lil' rich I would set it to 38psi @WOT. That should help. Also check your TPS voltage and your timing.

I don't remember what cam is in it off the top off my head. I will get the cam card out the glove box tomorrow. It is too cold tonight. It also supposedly has 1.7 rockers arms. I haven't checked myself though. I am just amazed that someone went to the trouble of putting a cam in a 150,000 plus engine.

Also I did a compression check and all of clinders were in the 175-180 range except #6 which I couldn't get above 150 psi. I am also going to try the adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
