Default I love my new gears...now a question

I do a lot of highway driving and my car has 137,000 miles. I hve to put a quart of oil in every week and a half to two weeks. The average speed on the highway here is 70 to 75 mph. That puts me at about 2100 to 2300 rpms. And last of all I drive a 70 mile round trip to work and back. My question is how much is to much when it comes to cruzing on the highway in regards rpms.

Cool

Don't sweat it, when you need an engine, you need an engine. This question is why papa's old ford didn't come with a tach.

Thumbs up kinda high oil use

500 - 700 miles per quart according to my calculations. That is pretty high consumption. Assuming you have no oil leaks, and your PCV screen is clean and new, and a new Motorcraft PCV valve.

You have either worn rings, or shot valve seals or even worn valve guides. You can run a compression test to help rule out ring wear.

2000 - 2300 RPM cruise is not too bad. Even with 2.73 gears, without overdrive that will only get you to about 60 mph or so, and remember overdrive was not out in force till the 80's

Default

It is wierd with the oil leak. I can check it everday for the two week period and it will be fine. Then the next day the oil light will come on and I will be a half a quart low.

I have been driving my car for a week and the gear whine is getting worse. I made an appointment, but he can not get me in till next week. I don't even like driving my car because it sounds like an old truck when slow down. And when I am behind a car on a two lane and down shift to pass it sound like an DC10.
