expensive or inexpensive fan for my mods?
what would you recommend for the mods that i have on my 90 lx?(if the head gasket isnt blown!) the tstat is 180 and stays around there while driving, but when stopped it rose to 220 today before i cranked the heat on full blast to lower the temp. anyways, ive read about how the black magic fan kills the alternator and stays on too long etc. i know there are some fans for about 1/3 the price. what do you think i shoiuld get considering my goals below- THIS IS A DAILY DRIVER CAR BUT WILL TAKE IT TO TRACK A FEW TIMES AND ALWAYS RACE ON STREET IF OPPORTUNITY- SO I NEED IT TO STAY COOL!
i want to keep my original alternator want it not to affect the battery power if possible i want to be able to trun it on and off at will (only??choices??) not to spend an arm and a leg on installation charges/ thanks how much would a shop charge to install an electric fan? ****

I have a Black Magic fan and it works wonders. I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for!" Installation was very simple (45-60 mins). You can do it with a few hand tools. Wireing was simple as well. Everything is labled for you. When I ran my car on the street as my daily driver, it never killed my alternator charging problems. I later upgraded to the 130amp G3 alternator because of all the electric devices that I am/was running. It come with a sensor that you can adjust for it to come on at a certin temp. I wired it a little differently then the directions. When my motor is on, the fan is on. You can do the same but connect it to a switch inside your car. For 100 bucks, you can't go wrong.

thanks for the info. looks like i will buy that, however 100 bucks? are you talking about installation charges if I had it done or the price of the fan? I was finding it to be around 200 dollars. thanks again. also, does the original fan clutch come out and this takes the place, or both together?

That is the cost for the fan itself. I have no clue what it would cost to have it installed because I do my own work. You will have to remove your fan clutch, and your fan shroud. They give you a bracket to remount your coolant resevor.

I can also vouge for the black magic fan, but man with pullies and the stock altenator your car will run the battery dead everytime you get in traffic. i would also recommend the 130 amp altenator upgrade. also check the condition of the radiator

My stock fan was cracked when I changed my water pump, so I put in a Black Magic one. install was a breeze and it cooled great. With pulleys, I had to watch my battery, went dead once. Then I put a 3G alternator in. Then I upgraded my radiator to the Fluidyne aluminum model. My fan kicks on every once in a while at it's lowest thermistic setting (180*) Between my 180* t-stat, new water pump, Black Magic Fan, and aluminum radiator, it keeps my engine running nice and steady. The electric fan itself is a wonderful piece and I would reccomend it to anyone who is looking for a better cooling mod and it also frees up a few hp. Can't go wrong with it! ~Brian

wow, seems like i need to get thge alternator too! does having a jacobs ignition system help at all? i wasnt planning on spending 400 dollars on just parts! everyone's battery goes dead from using this fan? are there any other fans that i could use w/o having to change alternators?

well i actually ran the car at idle to see what amps i had with accessories, heat on high, radio etc. on. it read 14 amps W/O anything on at idle, and 13.5 amps with everything on. Now my question is, how many amps would be drained from the fan, and do you think it will still drain the battery given the numbers i stated above? Thanks

Since you have pullys yes.... You can do one of two things to make this upgrade easier and cost friendly.....
1) Buy the Black Magic fan and upgrade to the G3 alternator. (fan - $100, alternator - $100-125 from autoparts store) Just make sure you tell them you need an alternator for a 94 OR 95 Mustang GT. 2) Buy the Black Magic fan and buy an over drive pully from March. (fan - $100, pully - $40-50) This makes your alternator spin faster then stock to produce more power. With the underdrive pullys, it's spin slower for less drag on the motor. I ended up doing all three (fan, alternator, and overdrive pully) upgrades but that's because I'm running a lot of electronics (elect. fan, MSD ingition, MSD retard, elect. H2O pump, alarm, bigger stero, radar detector, etc...) |

sounds like i should do all 3. can you tell me the number to the place where you bought your fan? the cheapest i have seen it is for 210! if i can get it for 100, i can afforf all 3. thanks!

I got it from Tommy Vaugh Ford here in Houston. They are a Ford Racing distrubitor. I got a hook up there when I bought it. I would try Summit, or Jegs...

ok this should be m last post. i never noticed before that the pulleys are stock! you think if i bought the fan and had it installed without underdrive puleys it would have a better chance of not being drained? thanks for all your replies cyber!

If you are going to keep the stock pullys, then you should be fine. If you are running a lot of electric equipment (ex: big system, ignition box, retard, etc...) then I would upgrade to the G3. If you are going to get underdrive pullys in the future, get an overdrive for the alternator to make up for the slower spining fan belt. Don't forget to get an overdrive pully for the correct alternator. 87-93's have a different design pully then the 94-95's.

I got my G3 alternator from a junk yard for $40.00. I have had it for about 5 months and I haven't had a problem yet. I have the black magic fan and Auto Specialties Underdrive Pulleys. Easy installation and the best thing is, if the alternator craps out, I won't have to pay for the $40.00 core. Hit the junkyards partner.
