Default Need help pulling codes!

I got my engine back in and running with the longtubes and the check engine light is on. I had to extend the O2 sensors to reach to the back of the headers where the bung for the sensors were. Now they are in there, and the light is still on. I know there's a module under the hood of the car to pull codes with but I'm not sure how to do it. Can anyone help?

thx-

Auto Zone and other parts stores will pull your codes for free if you want to go that route.

Well,

The local guys here are morons and I'd rather learn the procedure myself since I do most of the work on my car. I'm one of those stubborn guys that hates to let other people do the things that I'm capable of :-)

Thanks Chris,

The problem is I'm not getting any codes KOER.

Here's what happens:

I turn the car on, and appx 5 seconds later the check engine light comes on.

I need some advice here in terms of analyzing the problem. If I perform the KOEO test, I got a bunch of codes that make sense (no cats, no cannister purge, etc) but are these codes important? My light doesn't come on when KOEO, it comes on during KOER. SO I should be concerned with the KOER test only?? If so, I can't retrieve codes KOER. I can't get the tester to retrieve signals. I'm watching the MIL indicator and during KOEO, it blinks accndingly. But KOER, it doesn't blink at all. I can tell it trying to do something but I just can't get any codes out of it. I would assume that the memory is keeping it from the statup without headers, but I've reset the CPU many times since then. I dunno here....I'm stumped. I can't get to test 5 KOER basically. I wonder if it's because I'm running a 351 instead of a 302? The step 5 is engine ID after all? Whatcha think?

Chris,

I tried it again and I can't even get her to start back up after I shut her off once reaching about 105-200 degrees. You klnow, my fuel lines are really close to the headers now......I hope that fuel isn't boiling!

I got her running after sitting for 10 minutes. But when I turn the tester to test it kills the engine....completly kills it. Any ideas?

Okay, slow down for a second. First and foremost, we need to cover the KOEO codes. Those should be corrected before even trying to pull KOER codes. Post what the KOEO codes are, as well as which of them you think are because of your mods, and what those mods are. I'll look them over.

OK :-)

I got 54, 67, 85, 95.

54 = ACT sensor (I don't know if I have an ACT sensor....there's only 1 port on my EFI unit and I use it for my coolant temp sending unit.)

67 = Neutral drive switch, clutch switch, AC (none of which I have)

85 = Cannister purge (Don't have that either)

96 = Thermactor (Don't use that either)

What other information can I give you?

Your computer thinks the outside air temp is -40F. You really should hook up your ACT sensor to something, even your air filter housing will work.

This is where I put it in my truck:

I'm a bit confused by this statement. Your coolant temp sending unit goes where coolant flows. Your ACT does not. Do you have a picture of what's under the hood that you can post?

Guys,

I tried attaching the pic but it didn't work. Let me explain better.

I have my coolant tempature sending unit above the right bank at the front of the manifold. On the thermo housing I have an ECT sensor (left bank side). I have unused plugs in the EFI harness. They look very similar to the plug that Chris has in the pic above. Does this help?

Questions:

1) What color are the wires coming from the harness for the ACT plug?

2) The car never starts right up, does the lack of the ACT contribute to this?

3) Where is the ACT sensor located in a stock 5.0?
The pic I was going to send doesn't show much anyway.

Jimberg, can you send a pic so I know where the plug is on the harness?

Chris, How can I find out where this sensor is supposed to go, and where my plug is on the harness? Any wiring diagrams??

Oh, and almost forgot. I actually had to have my car towed home because of a fouled ACT sensor. I'd look at that, and also make sure the PCV valve is hooked up and working correctly if your engine is starting hard.

Thanks for the pics. I need to call Edlebrock tech....I don't think my manifold has that bung for the ACT sensor. PCV seems to be working right.....I pull it out and I can hear it when I shake it (that's a decent test, right?).

Problem might be that the 351W lower manifold I got is from the trucks, and might not have the ACT sensor fitting.

But I don't have the evap cannister....is that a problem?

THanks again!

Jim and Chris,

Thanks a bunch for the help. I found the ACT sensor way under the upper man. and it was unplugged. Once I plugged her in, I was all set and the light went off. No more code 54 KOEO. I also soldered my O2 connections rather than crimping them. Thanks again guys....I appreciate the help.
