Default Is this possible?

I finally took out the air silencer in my 86 gt and I feel the difference. The thing that concerns me though, is that the exhaust seems to be quieter without it than with it on. Reading stuff on this matter always says the car should get louder(at least from the intake), so does anyone have any thoughts on why this might be? or is this the norm?

The exhaust doesn't get quieter, it is just that the air intake is louder so the exhaust is no longer all that you hear.

In all honesty, my ride feels smoother now than when the silencer was in it. Going through first gear, i used to feel a sort of sputtering, but now its smooth throughout. Now, I don't know if its any faster, but I do feel a difference.
