Performance
Hey first I want to say that this site is ver informative. I just bought my '89 5.0 5 spd and i have learned so much already.
Anyway i am asking for suggestions on improvements to gain power. i am a senior in high school working a part time job for 7 bucks an hour. Suggestions could be like headers, ignition, bolt ons whatever. Fairly low budget. Thanks Nick '89 Hatch B+M ripper shifter, Flowmasters, K+N filter |

A majority of people on this board will say to do gears first. Gears are the best performance gain for the $$. I think you'd be happy with 4.10's but 3.73's would work also.
Another good mod for the money are pulleys. Plus pulleys are only like 100 bucks. ------------------ 91 GT AOD: 14.71@91.78mph SOLD!! 01 GT 5-speed on order: Released from Plant, awaiting convoy to dealer |

Thanks for all your input. I think the 4:10's are a little high for mileage reasons but I could be wrong. i've heard like 3:55 or 3:73. Any suggestions about an ignition system ex. MSD 6AL etc. Also i was wondering about headers. I live about 5 minutes away from JBA so i was thinking of thier headers. Sorry about all the questions i am new to this.

I wouldn't worry about you ignition system until you have a few more mods. Go with a set of 3.73's they'll make a world of difference.

get you're *** to a junkyard fool! find a '96-'01 explorer. get the intake and heads off that mofo straight up. cost ya a cool 600 bucks maybe--a bargain for GT-40p heads, GT-40 lower intake and a modified cobra upper intake. slap those bad mutha's on your stang and you'll be pretty good to go. cruise on over to the magical site EBAY while you're at it, find some mac headers (since they're the only ones that fit gt-40p's i think), a used X pipe, and used after-cat. get an E cam or B cam, 1.7 ratio roller rockers. total cost: $1500-$2000. might be out of your budget, but it's something to save for. considering you'll be at about ~320 hp with all that, it's a fairly good deal.

who makes the best pulleys. i have heard asp and march are good but anyone have any preferences? How much labor is usually associated with gears and much of a difference can i expect with say 3:55 or 3:73

Automatic go w/ 4:10's, you buy a stang then worry about mpg geeez . Before I put my 4:10's in I would drive around in D, now its od all to often. I actually gained mpg (around town), as for highway its 80-90 all day long (80mph @ 2900 rpm). John

labor for a gear installation will probably run around $200.
