Question How do you install a tach?

Basically what is involved in installing an aftermarket tach on an 87 ford. Specifically this would be going on my 87 Continental with 5.0 motor. Not that I really need a tach for an aod but I want one. They come in handy even on autos.
I would need to run a ground wire,a switched power wire, and splice a wire into some sort of lights. How does the main part work as far as splicing into say the coil or the ignition or what not? I don't really want to be splicing into any big wires and messing anything up.

You need to connect the signal wire to the negative lead on the coil. As far as lighting goes, just wire it into the headlamp switch so it comes on when the headlights are on. Go to the Autometer website, they have good instructions that will help you.
