Question Converting EFI to Carb

I am looking into this quite seriously and would like to know how much work is involved in doing this swap. I have Edel 6037 Heads and an RPM Upper. I would like to do the job myself but have very little experience in doing these jobs although am pretty handy mechanically. Other than picking up a new carb and manifold what would I need to do/buy?

I really appreciate your help guys

Yeah man...it's pretty easy. You'll need the aformentioned carb and intake obviously. You'll also need a low pressure fuel pump since the EFI pump will kill your carb in short order. I'd recommend an in tank pump from an SVO. They run right around 7psi which is just right. You'll also need a new distributor without a TFI module. It's not a terribly tricky swap but it would certainly be a good idea to get someone who's got some experience to help. If you don't already have a cam, this would be a good time to drop one in. Also, if you've got an automatic tranny be sure to get the right hook ups for the kickdown linkage. Otherwise you'll burn up your AOD. Plan on about a whole weekend and about 3 24 packs. I'd suggest getting the Edelbrock Performer (or Performer RPM) kit that has a carb, intake, and cam/lifters. That should match your heads really well.

Thanks for your help!
Now I know what we are talking about and I can fill you in little more. The car already has FMS StudMount 1.6 RR and a B303 cam in it. I also have a 190lph Holley in-tank fuel pump in the rear with a Crane FPR. It has a T-5 in it. And now I need a new distributor too?! Okay... so is that it? Is everthing else the same?

THANKS!

what kind of a kickdown cable do you need for this swap?? I'm still looking for a kickdown that will work for my car. I need to find one before it gets warm and I can drive my car again

I heard you need all new fuel lines from the tank to the carb, not too sure, but better ask a 2nd opinion.
also, i was wondering why would you want to go carb if you have a performer RPM intake, 190lph pump, & it all works?
hope this helps

You will need a fuel pump, something in the 5-8psi range and a REGULATOR.. You dont need more the 5.5-6.0psi - If you need a little more or alittle less you can change it with the regulator...

BowTie Eater: I want to swap because I was in an accident and want to get around emmisions so I have to drop the motor in a body that's older than '82. (It's alot cheaper too!)

79 Stang: I guess my Crane FPR won't work cause it's made for injected cars?

You guys are really helping!
SO that's it then?
Will I be able to use the same throttle cable and just run it to the carb instead of the TB?
Hears my sig for reference

So is it possable to run an AOD with a carbed motor? If so, where can I find this kickdown linkage?

You use the pump that's already in the tank or you mean you use an in-tank replacement pump?

I can use my 6037 Edelbrocks with a carb no problem right guys?

Let me enter some light on this subject, Yes you can use the pump you have for now since it is bigger than the stock pump, I have a 255 lph in tank and the only problem you will have is getting the fuel pressure down to around 7 psi. I hade to use two regulators to get the pressure down far enough; one return stile and one non return stile and it works but if you can afford to I would have the fuel system redone for your setup.
Yes you can use the stock throttle cable but it is longer than the one for carburetor.

I don’t know anything about the aod, sorry.

Hope this helps

I'm doing the swap right now, and it can be involved.

Fuel Syst: You can run your stock pump or larger, but you'll need to regulate the pressure down, you cna get away with it using a Race reg from Mallory it is a 4 port, and has a return. It is a tough unit, and will handle up to 50 psi. Route it in, and reroute it to the return. I've used it b4 in another swap it will work fine on a mild motor.

I would recommend swapping to an external carb pump, and a sump, or fuel cell. The stock fuel lines should be able to support a mild motor, but anything over 350hp I'd upgrade your lines to at least 3/8.

Trans: If you have an AOD you can get a new cable, and adapter from Lokar(www.lokar.com) they sell the shorter cable, and extension you'll need.

Throttle: I think the stock cable will work fine, but it'll be a bit long.

If you have a T5...obvious!

Heads" Your E-bok's will be fine

Dizzy: you'll need a regular dist, as the EFI one has no advance capabilities. I'm using a MAllory Unilite w/mechanical advance. I believe you can use an older Duraspark.

Email me if you have anymore Q's
