Default slop in the steering

I've noticed some slop in my steering lately. is the steering gear usally the problem area. It sounds like there is a mild clunk noise from the gearbox when i turn the steering wheel back and forth.
Does the entire steering box need to be replaced if this is the problem.
Thanks
