Default smog pump

i've found a bracket kit for removing the smog pump...should i even bother with it?

The best thing to do with a smog pump is get rid of it they sieze eventually .I didnt need a kit to remove mine, I just found a shorter belt.

all i have to do it take it off and put a smaller belt on? there isnt any holes i gotta fill or hoses to clamp up?

My bad,yours is fuel injected,im running a carb all of my emissions are in the trash where they belong.we can get away with that here as we have no emission laws.You still should be able to leave the pump on and just run the shorter belt,it will trip the engine light if you bypass it,you may have to remove the 3 bolts in the pulley of the pump,to clear.

You'll have to use the eliminator because of the serpentine routing, unless you decide to dump more (A/C, P/S). The optimum setup is Alternator, W/P and crank. Switching to a normal rotation W/P in the process will leave you driving only two accessories.

But, just for smog pump removal get yourself the FRPP eliminator. Remove all the hoses to the pump. Plug the vacuum lines, air injection port on the H-pipe and cross-over at the back of the heads. You'll be surprised at just how easy it makes changing plugs with all that crap gone.

Thats how mine is set-up. A 83 T-bird water pump does the trick.

After reading Jeffs reply to this thread,I realized I may have made a mistake in my reply.If I did there would also be a problem with the belt routing that I have on my engine now.I'm running ;water pump,ps.,alt,and the tensioner on top,Its a 1990 engine with the water pump on it for that year.With the setup I have now it is possible to delete the smog pump by simply using a shorter belt.I would like to know why the pump can not be removed without the kit.By doing this I realize that the gap between the tensioner and the belt off the water pump is closer but it will work by finding a belt suitable,(wich took me a few tries.)Everything elese can be removed,and I capped the ports in the back of the heads.If there is something wrong with what I have done here I would appreciate a reply.

If you've got a reverse rotation water pump (stock for the serpentine drive motors), and the W/P pulley is riding on the smooth, non-ribbed side of the belt then you're OK. There's more than one-way to skin the cat, you choose one. Some people will even reverse the tensioner spring to pull up on the belt to avoid it being so close like yours. I call these 'mechanic killers' since it makes it dangerous to do anything on the motor with the motor running.
