SROD questions
I just registered and thought I'd ask you guys a couple Q's. I have 2 cars:
'83 LTD Brougham, 3.8L, AOD '83 Mustang GL, 5.0L, SROD I bought the Mustang for really cheap, dirty as hell with a couple minor dents but it runs good. I'm going to probably fix up the interior and body and sell it. However I'd like to swap engines between the cars, leaving the transmissions intact. Questions: Will I need new flywheels for each engine? I know the V6 AOD will not last w/ the 5.0 but I can get that replaced. The big concern here is the 3.8 & SROD. Will that be balanced, or will I need a T5 V6 flywheel (from the '94+ Mustangs)? Or even a custom balanced one? Thanks, Tom |
I don't know about the V6, but I do know that the 5.0 is externally balanced through a matched harmonic balancer and flywheel/flexplate. I wouldn't even try what you are suggesting, but if you do, you need to make sure that the engines have the correct pieces at both ends, regardless of which vehicle they go in.
Take care, -Chris |
I know there are flywheel differences between the 5.0 (28 & 50 oz) but I can't remember which years, or which trannies they were hooked up to.
I'm pretty sure the 3.8 uses the same flywheel throughout all the years, until it was matched to a T5 in '94. But that's when they changed to the SC blocks. I don't really know much about those 3.8's. I do get the feeling if this 5.0 will bolt up to an SROD, T5 or AOD with the same flywheel, the same could be said about the 3.8. |
