?Stang Running hot?

when i come to an idle for about 10-15 minutes my car starts to oveerheat. and my fan doesn't seem to kick on. how do i know if it is the fan or the sensor or both? if it is the fan is there anything cheaper than the factory replacement fan I found one used for $140+shipping (that sounds awfully high) i have the factory electric fan and it seemed to cool just fine until this all started. any help is greatly appreciated.

What is the ambient temp? How hot does the car run? Does the fan ever kick in?

i don't know the exact temp but it gets all the way to red line and it smells like boiling antifreeze (you know the smell). the fan never kicks on no matter how high the temp rises. and when the temp gets really hot after sitting and idleing for a while when you go to pull out sometimes it will stall or even die, but as long as it is moving it runs just fine and stays cool?

Sounds like a sensor or relay that's gone. Personally, all I did was put in a 16" electric fan, and wired it to a switch so that I could turn it on/off on my own, maybe that's something you'd like to consider?

Ya, I'd start with the sensor.

is there anyway to check the sensor or fan?

You should replace the Sensor which is mounted on the top of the intake right after the Thermostat. This will not make a difference, but it is worth a try. You will have to replace the Black Relay Box that resides behind the Radiator and fan Assembly. It is mounted to a L-bracket that in turn mounts to the upper front radiator/crossmember. This box is pricy and don't go used. expect to pay 100 dollars or more. This is a change in the 94-95 stangs and these boxes contain three relays that would have been better left independent, but who understands designers.

hmm, 140$ for a replacement? i would just get a "black magic", i would say they are more durable, and dependable, only a circuit breaker, no relays that i know of.

I think he is asking if he can ground out the fan or something to see if it comes on. Or for a way to check the relay.

Im sure you can check the sensor with an multimeter, but you need the specs. Get a manual, and go from there.

THe computer doesn't turn the fan on soon enough... something like at 210deg!

Instead of replacing all the stock stuff (especially your fan, it's actually better than a black magic)... you might wanna check out the www.psm1.com variflow controller.
