Starter problem...help please

I replaced the 302 in my 1989 Mustang with a fresh 1978 302 and replaced the 78 pan and pump with the 89 stuff but the 78 starter seems to big to fit by the pan. Will a 89 starter mate up to the bolt holes and gear teeth? The trans is 4 speed by the way. Thanks.

they should all be the same! it should fit!

oops, did Ford change to a smaller high torque starter??

Is the 89 302 starter physically smaller than the 78 one? It must be if it fits alongside that pan I guess....mostly concerned about the flywheel/starter drive lining up I guess. Thanks for response.

I agree, the starter is bigger on the 78 style, I have one. It should still work fine though.
