stater problem from hell.
I am working on a 1992 coupe with a stock carbureted 302w, it had a 4 banger tranny in it. They decided to remove the 4 banger tranny before it broke and installed a SN 1994 tranny and bellhousing. I figured the correct starter would be one from a 1994 mustang. I installed the starter and the bendix gear is too far to the outside of the flywheel. I laid under the car and watched the starter as they turned it over and the bendix gear comes far enough out but is too far to the outside of the flywheel.
I heard that a starter from a late model 351W truck might fix my problem cause it has a bigger bendix gear. Does anyone know if this is true? Help???? |
Re: stater problem from hell.
How many teeth does the flywheel have?

Re: stater problem from hell.
I went ahead and pulled the tranny and the bellhousing has 3.8 stamped on it.
I am now on the hunt for a V8 SN bellhousing. |

From what I can tell the 3.8 liter has a 164 tooth flywheel which would explain why the starter doesnt engage the 157 tooth 5.0 flywheel. I am finding that it is hard to locate a 1994-1995 5.0 bellhousing. Surely a 94-95 5.0 bellhousing with a 157 tooth fywheel will work. |
Re: stater problem from hell.
That trans is from a 94-95 V8 car. All you have to do to make that thing 'normal' is change out the input shaft and input bearing retainer. Then you could get any old 93-down bell.

Re: stater problem from hell.
Its been too long since I have done a T-5, so I cant really give you any tips or tricks. I've done several TKO's in the last couple years, but I do know they are different.
IIRC, theres nothing to it. The T-5's use a caged roller bearing between the mainshaft and the input, whereas the TKO/3550 use individual roller bearings. That right there should make things a ton easier. Follow this link and click on service manual. Section 4.1 has all the parts breakdowns and disassembly instructions. http://www.tremec.com/English/products/T-5.asp Andy |

Also, I'm sure whoever you order the parts from will give you good phone tech as well. I know D&D in Michigan would.
