Steel steering column
Is there a way to modify, adapt, or replace the steering column for safety reasons? I want to buy a 66 Mustang for my 16 year-old but the steel column worries me.Any suggestions?

I believe your concerns are actually about the long steering input shafts on these (65-67) cars and not the column itself.
Ford changed to a collapsable column in 68, and the biggest change was getting rid of the one piece input shaft on the steering gear. I'm not sure if you can just swap in a 68 steering box and column, or if you have to go with some kind of aftermarket unit. Pick up an issue of "Mustang Monthly" or "Mustangs and Fords" for vendors to contact. I believe the Aug2000 issue of "Mustangs and Fords" has an article on a retrofit tilt steering column. Good luck. repub1 no offense but your biggest concern if you already havent done it is put the steel divider behind the rear seat.. I am a 16 year old mustang driver.. I dont care about the steering colum.. I am more concerned about the exploding tanks.. I hope you already knew this I didnt want to scare you

you can swap in the later model steering column. you will have to have the later model gear box to do it,just did it to my moms car. it was a little bit of work getting the old steering column out but it will work. they changed the design in mid 67
