Steering rack

I had a mechanic at the dealer I work at tell me that I need a new rack. Is this a common problem for stangs, do they go often?
What are some signs of them going south, and how hard are they to replace?
thanx

The combination of aluminum & other metals often causes corrosion & internal leaking... often ruining the ps pump.

is there a better rack to get so it doesn't corrode and ruin the pump?

I've been told that some of the rebuilds have eliminated the aluminum component... I don't know what ones though.

I'm probably gonna go manual too... I'll just get an 18 or 20:1 ratio (a little easier than the 15:1). The power assist doesn't do much, and it'll eliminate 30# or so.

Before i wrecked my '91 4 banger stang, i noticed the pump howled like crazy, and the PS fluid was filled with metal shavings from the rack. I've heard of the pumps being crap, and i've occasionally heard of racks going out, so i don't think it's uncommon.

anyone know where i can get a rack that doesn't have the aluminum components?

my ps pump goes thru fluid fairly quickly and sounds like a blower when its getting low each time
