Question When does the stock intake quit?

My car seems to fall on it's face at 5400 rpm, i know stock intake is not for high rpm, but with my mods should it work a little better?
im afraid it could be my valves floating, i do have an explorer intake in my possesion i got tonight, i will hopefully install that next weekend, look at my new best e.t. in sig, im not happy with that, if it dont go 105mph with the intake im pulling the heads for some better springs
what ya think? timing 15*, fpr at 44 psi as is.
thnx....

When i put the trick flow street intake on, the powerband increased heavily 2,000 rpm and higher and i lost a little bit of torque under 2,000 (which isn't what i'm concerned about )
You can definately feel a difference with a better intake manifold, the engine used to start dying out 4500 and above and now pulls great to about the 5800-6000 rpm range.

Sounds to me like it might need to breathe a bit. If you float valves you will definately hear it. Backfiring a lot and shiz. Sounds like your combo definately requires more than stock intake. Slap that puppy on there and tell us how you do man.

I'm surprised you got the stock lower to pull good to 5,400 rpm. That Explorer should fix your problem.

The explorer flows way better than the stocker. My car runs better with the explorer intake than it did with the cobra.

Thats what i want to hear, im going to get the tap for the act sensor, maybe some paint for the upper tommorow, but i'll be done next friday.

in the higher rpms it does not backfire, but it will studder, just loses steam i guess. today i backed off timing and fp, and got it to make good power at 5500 rpm. (stock tach)

i'll post new e.t gains probaly next wed, of course i'll have to clean up the intake with a dremel first.

also, im thinking about going down to 1.6 rr's to get some of that lift off the stock springs.....all in all, the car pulls hard, and is very responsive even with the gear ratio.

thnx for the opinions.

Just a side note for your power drop at 5400 RPM. When in factory trim power drops at 5250, so the intake is probably only good through 5500. I use to pull my RPM till the tach bounced with stock everything and the E-cam. I know the tach wasn't right. But remember that the E-303 peaks in power at 5500 rpm. One thing that would help for information sake is an autometer tach. I just thought I would offer up my opinion. Good luck with the new intake.

Be sure to lube the tap good while your cutting for good clean threads.

You dont have to tapp that 3/8's hole in the #5 runner if you dont want to.

You can relocate the ACT sensor to the air intake tube if you want.

dark 5.0, why did you go to a cobra, if you said the explorer ran better?

I hate to pull up an old thread, but I have a question on the ACT sensor. My ACT sensor required a 5/8 inch tap on the #5 runner...not the 3/8 that you have on this post. Is that normal?

Yea this is an old thread, i may have mistaken the size? since i gave the tap to my friend, i dont remember?

but all in all, i had it finished, had the intake cut on a little (porting) and i love it, best bang for buck intake i ever seen. good luck.

I had to use a 3/8 inch pipe thread tap for mine.

I port intakes and tap the EGR coolant and ACT holes on a regular basis and I can say that the Ford intakes (stock & Cobra family) have 3/8 NPT holes from the factory.
